Memristive control of mutual spin Hall nano-oscillator synchronization for neuromorphic computing

Mohammad Zahedinejad et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that memristive gating of W/CoFeB/MgO/AlOx-based SHNOs can effectively address the challenges of interfacing, tuning, and storing the state of large arrays of SHNOs. The memristor in its high resistance state modulates the perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, while in its low resistance state it adds or subtracts current to the SHNO drive, allowing for reversible turning on/off of mutual synchronization in chains of SHNOs. This approach enables non-volatile tuning of mutual synchronization in chains of up to four oscillators and provides a path toward individual control in large oscillatory arrays.

Phase-Binarized Spin Hall Nano-Oscillator Arrays: Towards Spin Hall Ising Machines

Afshin Houshang et al.

Summary: Ising machines (IMs) are physical systems designed to find solutions to combinatorial optimization problems. In this study, we demonstrate an oscillator-based IM using nanoconstriction spin Hall nano-oscillators. We show that the phase states of the oscillators can solve combinatorial optimization problems and our architecture holds promise for faster sampling, reduced power consumption, and smaller footprint compared to existing technologies.

Easy-plane spin Hall nano-oscillators as spiking neurons for neuromorphic computing

Danijela Markovic et al.

Summary: Analytically showing that easy-plane spin Hall nano-oscillators excited by a spin current polarized perpendicularly to the easy plane have phase dynamics similar to Josephson junctions, suitable for neuromorphic computing. Utilizing a specific nanoconstriction geometry, the easy-plane spiking dynamics are maintained in an experimentally feasible architecture. Two elementary neural network blocks essential for neuromorphic computing are simulated, demonstrating the summing and injection of output spikes energies and the multiplication of outputs by synaptic weights.

Ultrafast Ising Machines using spin torque nano-oscillators

Dagur Ingi Albertsson et al.

Summary: Combinatorial optimization problems are difficult to solve on traditional von Neumann architectures, leading to the development of Ising Machines (IMs) based on quantum annealers and optical and electronic oscillators, which show speed-ups compared to CPU and GPU algorithms. Spin torque nano-oscillators (STNOs) exhibit fundamental characteristics needed to realize IMs, and can solve Max-Cut problems.

Out-of-plane magnetization oscillation in spin Hall device assisted by field-like torque

Tomohiro Taniguchi

Summary: This study suggests that out-of-plane oscillations can be excited in a ferromagnet with the assistance of field-like torque, providing a new approach for applications such as microwave generators and neuromorphic computing. The research focuses on the dynamic trajectory of magnetization modified by an additional field from the field-like torque, which drives auto-oscillation in a typical nonmagnetic material used in spin Hall devices like tungsten.

Summary: This study demonstrates the electrical synchronization of four non-vortex uniformly-magnetized STOs using a single common current source in both parallel and series configurations, resolving the frequency-area quandary for designing on-chip communication systems based on STOs. Additionally, by integrating the electrically connected eight STOs, the researchers successfully demonstrate a wireless and battery-free energy harvesting system.

Highly dose dependent damping-like spin-orbit torque efficiency in O-implanted Pt

Utkarsh Shashank et al.

Summary: In this study, the damping-like torque efficiency was increased more than 3.5 times by using a better approach of low energy O+ ion implantation in modified Pt-oxide. The spin transmission was improved with a smaller trade-off in the longitudinal resistivity, and the enhanced spin Hall effect in O-implanted Pt was attributed to a side-jumping mechanism. The torques from the O-implanted Pt remained twofold and symmetrical, allowing for quantification using spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance-based line shape analysis.
