Overview of imaging methods based on terahertz time-domain spectroscopy

Qi Wang et al.

Summary: Due to the unique characteristics of terahertz (THz) waves, such as low-energy, penetrating, and broadband, THz imaging has been regarded as cutting-edge technology in many fields. High-performance THz imaging systems are becoming indispensable as technology demand grows. The ability of THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) system to extract spectra from amplitude and phase information opens virtually unlimited possibilities for imaging applications. Researchers are focusing on fast imaging components and the latest developments of THz-TDS-based imaging methods to improve performance further.

Molecular dynamic investigation of ethanol-water mixture by terahertz-induced Kerr effect

Hang Zhao et al.

Summary: The terahertz Kerr effect (TICE) spectroscopy was used to study low-frequency molecular motions in pure ethanol and ethanol-water mixtures. It was found that the relative molecular contribution of ethanol in the mixture changes nonlinearly with increasing water molecules, indicating a complex structural perturbation of the ethanol hydrogen bond network. This work offers a new perspective for investigating hydrogen bond network structure and dynamics in aqueous amphiphilic solutions.

Giant Third-Order Nonlinear Response of Liquids at Terahertz Frequencies

Anton Tcypkin et al.

Summary: The nonlinear response of liquids in the terahertz regime has attracted significant interest recently. This study reported measurements of the nonlinear refractive-index coefficient n2 at terahertz frequencies for liquids with noncentrosymmetric molecules, showing values in the terahertz region 6 orders of magnitude larger than in the visible or near-IR. A simple theoretical model confirmed that the large third-order nonlinearity is mainly due to the second-order perturbative component of the vibrational response of these molecules.
