An efficient patch-to-patch method for coupling independent finite element subdomains with intersecting interfaces

Huangcheng Fang et al.

Summary: The proposed method presents a mortar-type approach to couple independent finite element subdomains efficiently. By dividing the constraint matrix into pure and cross constraint systems, it achieves effective submatrix condensation and avoids over-constrained behavior. Comparative studies of theoretical and numerical solutions demonstrate the method's optimal convergence rate and high computational efficiency.

Scalable three-dimensional hybrid continuum-discrete multiscale modeling of granular media

Weijian Liang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a scalable three-dimensional multiscale framework for continuum-discrete modeling of granular materials, combining a continuum-based material point method (MPM) and a discrete element method (DEM). A parallel scheme based on MPI model is developed to address computational cost, achieving significant speedup in large-scale simulations. The framework is validated and applied to simulate the intrusion of a solid object, showcasing its numerical performance and predictive capability.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of new tunnelling on existing tunnels using a centrifuge model test. The results show that the soil pressures and bending movements of the existing tunnels behave differently due to the new tunnel excavation. The joint deformation of the existing tunnels can be classified into translation, rotation, or a combination of both.

Centrifuge modelling of tunnelling below existing twin tunnels with different types of support

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: The study used centrifuge model tests to investigate the effects of new tunneling on existing tunnels, including surface settlements, soil pressures, bending movements, and joint behaviors. The results showed that the volume loss from new tunnel excavation was smaller than the soil volume moving into the tunnel, and the maximum settlement of the segmental lining model was larger than that of the composite lining model. Additionally, the soil pressures on different positions of the existing tunnel behaved differently, and the bending movements of the existing tunnels decreased due to new tunnel excavation.

A virtual interface-coupled extended finite element method for three-dimensional contact problems

Huangcheng Fang et al.

Summary: In this article, a virtual interface-coupled technique is proposed for modeling three-dimensional contact behaviors of nonconforming interfaces. The method constructs an approximation of the displacement field by introducing enriched nodes and imposes the connection between virtual interface and discontinuous interface using the dual Lagrange multiplier method. The proposed method provides an effective, robust, and fast way to simulate arbitrary discontinuous interfaces in XFEM.

A generalized complex variable method for multiple tunnels at great depth considering the interaction between linings and surrounding rock

Huangcheng Fang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a non-iterative analytical method for calculating the mechanical field of multiple lined tunnels with high efficiency and precision. By expanding the analytic function at each tunnel boundary, accurate stress and displacement fields in the whole multiply-connected domain can be expressed, independent conformal mappings make it convenient to deal with multiple arbitrary-shaped boundaries.

Study on soil gap formation beneath existing underground structures due to new excavation below

Xiang Liu et al.

Summary: A soil structure separation model based on subgrade reaction analysis is proposed in this paper to study the impact of new excavations on existing underground structures. Parametric analyses have been conducted to investigate the main influence factors on soil gap formation and a soil gap coefficient C-g is provided for preliminary assessment. The research indicates that a soil gap is potentially formed beneath existing underground structures when the soil gap coefficient C-g is less than 300.

A semi-implicit material point method based on fractional-step method for saturated soil

Shyamini Kularathna et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new formulation of material point method (MPM) to model coupled soil deformation and pore fluid flow problems within the theory of porous media. The algorithm includes an implicit treatment of pore-water pressure, leading to reduced pressure oscillations and increased time step size, independent of fluid incremental strain level and soil permeability. The proposed method is validated through numerical tests and practical engineering problems involving large deformations.

Analytical algorithm for longitudinal deformation profile of a deep tunnel

Qian Fang et al.

Summary: An analytical model is proposed to investigate the longitudinal deformation profile (LDP) of a deep tunnel in non-hydrostatic condition. The model considers the effects of axial and horizontal lateral pressure coefficients, revealing that the horizontal coefficient mainly affects LDP behind the tunnel face, while the axial coefficient dominates LDP ahead of the face. The proposed solution is verified by numerical simulation and compared with LDP functions recommended by other researchers.
