Source and enrichment mechanism of fluoride in groundwater of the Hotan Oasis within the Tarim Basin, Northwestern China

Liwen Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution characteristics and controlling processes of fluoride enrichment in groundwater in arid inland irrigated areas. The results showed that fluoride concentration in groundwater was generally high and positively correlated with salinity. River water was identified as the main source of fluoride in groundwater, and anthropogenic inputs were found to contribute to fluoride enrichment.

Global analysis and prediction of fluoride in groundwater

Joel Podgorski et al.

Summary: Millions of people worldwide are negatively affected by chronic exposure to high concentrations of geogenic fluoride in groundwater. A state-of-the-art global fluoride hazard map, created using machine learning and over 400,000 fluoride measurements, reveals hotspots in central Australia, western North America, eastern Brazil, Africa, and Asia. The majority of the affected population resides in Asia and Africa, with Africa having 14 of the top 20 affected countries.

Yanxin Wang et al.

Summary: This review discusses the hydrogeological features, main sources of geogenic hazardous substances, dominant hydrogeochemical processes, and key factors controlling the occurrence of high arsenic, high fluoride, and high iodine groundwater. Four basic genetic types of GCGs are proposed by summarizing the characteristics of the distribution and major hydrogeochemical processes.

Hydrogeochemistry and health hazards of fluoride-enriched groundwater in the Tarim Basin, China

He Su et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fluoride content in groundwater and the occurrence of dental fluorosis in the Tarim Basin of China, finding that high-fluoride groundwater is mainly related to mineral dissolution, cation exchange, and evaporation, with fluoride concentrations closely linked to HCO3-, Na+, salinity, cation exchange, and evaporation. Health risk assessment shows that younger females suffer from more severe dental fluorosis.
