Risk factors and assessment strategies for the evaluation of human or environmental risk from metal(loid)s-A focus on Ireland

Rajat Nag et al.

Summary: High exposure to metals and metalloids can cause acute sickness and pose a severe threat to human health. This study identifies key metal(loid)s and highlights the mechanisms of their uptake by plants. Soil parameters like pH, organic matter content, clay content, cation exchange capacity, and microbial decomposition capability play critical roles in the mobility and availability of metal(loid)s in the environment.

Lab scale-study on the efficiency and distribution of energy consumption in chromium contaminated aquifer electrokinetic remediation

Huichao Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the remediation of chromium-contaminated natural fine sand aquifer by electrokinetic remediation. Continuous power supply and intermittent power supply modes were able to remove 96.8%-100.0% and 99.2-100.0% of Cr(VI) pollutants after 25 hours of operation, respectively. Electrokinetic remediation shows promising prospects for dynamic aquifers.

Sorption of arsenate(V) to naturally occurring secondary iron minerals formed at different conditions: The relationship between sorption behavior and surface structure

Hui Li et al.

Summary: The study focused on the sorption behavior of arsenic on naturally formed secondary iron minerals (SIMs) and found that the extent of As(V) sorption varied among different stages of SIMs but was not significantly influenced by Na+/Ca2+ concentration or ionic strength. Additionally, the immobilization of As(V) mainly depends on exchange with SO42- and surface complexation, along with phase transformation from schwertmannite/jarosite to goethite and other phases.

Effect of humus on the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soil by electrokinetic technology

Yunfeng Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of humus on the remediation of arsenic-contaminated soil by electrokinetic technology. The results showed that the addition of humus significantly promoted the release of As from the soil during electrokinetic remediation, leading to an obvious enhancement in remediation efficiency. The presence of oxygen-containing functional groups in humus desorbed As from the soil particles, making humus a green agent to improve the EKR technology.

Mobilization of arsenic from coal fly ash in the presence of dissolved organic matter

Amrika Deonarine et al.

Summary: The study examined the influence of dissolved organic matter on arsenic mobilization from coal fly ash and found that organic matter can enhance arsenic mobilization under both oxic and anoxic conditions. The interaction between dissolved organic matter and fly ash particles, as well as competitive desorption of arsenic adsorbed on mineral surfaces, are key factors in the mobilization process.

Effects of soil moisture on aging of exogenous selenate in three different soils and mechanisms

Hui Zhai et al.

Summary: Soil moisture has a significant impact on the aging of selenium in soil, with saturated conditions accelerating the aging process by reducing the soluble selenium fractions. The types of soil and moisture levels also play a role in the transformation of selenium species. Understanding these factors can provide insights for effective water management strategies in selenium biofortification practices.

The Pedosphere as a Sink, Source, and Record of Anthropogenic and Natural Arsenic Atmospheric Deposition

Andrew A. Meharg et al.

Summary: The Anthropocene has led to global-scale contamination of the biosphere through diffuse atmospheric dispersal of arsenic. Europe and North America have seen a significant increase in arsenic depositional flux, while South America and East Asia are now primary global-scale polluters. Natural sources of arsenic to the atmosphere include volcanic emissions, aeolian soil dust entrainment, and microbial biomethylation. Soil acts as both a sink and source of deposited arsenic, with mineral soils tending to be a sink and organic soils acting as both a sink and a source. Peatlands hold a considerable amount of Anthropocene released arsenic, which can potentially be remobilized under climate change scenarios.
