Sustainability performance assessment of the transport sector in European countries

Sarah B. Gruetzmacher et al.

Summary: The transport sector in the European Union plays a crucial role in the economy, but it heavily relies on oil resources and contributes to air pollution. The EU has been promoting sustainable transport development and assessing the environmental performance of its member countries. The results show an improvement in transport environmental performance in the past two years. Inefficient countries need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increase rail and inland waterways freight transport, and utilize more renewable energy in transport.

CO2 emissions and causal relationships in the six largest world emitters

G. Ortega-Ruiz et al.

Summary: This paper aims to analyze and compare the driving forces of carbon dioxide emissions among the six highest emitters in the world. It concludes that economic growth is the main driver of emissions increase, while energy intensity plays a crucial role in reducing emissions. The behavior differs between developed countries and developing countries, and Granger causality analysis highlights the relationship between energy intensity, GDP, and CO2 emissions.

Convergence of KAYA components in the European Union toward the 2050 decarbonization target

Simona Bigerna et al.

Summary: This study fills the gap in the literature by providing the first comprehensive evidence for the simultaneous convergence process of FOS reduction for all the Kaya components from 1990 to 2018. The results reveal evidence of sigma-absolute and conditional beta-convergence process for several groups of EU countries. Policy recommendations are provided through simulation of alternative scenarios to assess when the target levels of decarbonization can be reached.

Assessing the awareness and willingness of European experts to reduce their carbon footprint in everyday consumption

Tahamina Khanam et al.

Summary: This study investigates and evaluates the European expert's selection and conjoined degree of willingness to decrease the carbon footprint (WDC) of consuming products and services to mitigate climate change. The findings suggest regional and gender differences in the willingness to reduce carbon footprint.

Incorporating User Behaviour Into System Dynamics Modelling: A Case Study of Private vs. Public Transport in Latvia

Alina Safronova et al.

Summary: This paper presents a newly developed dynamic simulation model for analyzing transport user behavior. The study aims to evaluate the impact of various factors on human behavioral intentions, identify the inconvenience costs of public transport, and identify the necessary improvements for shifting the demand for population mobility from private cars to public transport. The assessment includes factors such as travel time and travel cost. Modeling assumptions are based on a specially designed public survey, which improves the reliability of the developed system dynamics model. The modeling results highlight the multiplicative effect of factors influencing mode shift.

A novel approach for assessing the ports' environmental impacts in real time - The IoT based port environmental index

Matija Siroka et al.

Summary: Port activities can harm human health and the environment through air pollution, noise, light, odor emission, waste accumulation, and water pollution. Existing methodologies for estimating environmental impacts of port activities are mainly qualitative, highlighting the need for a quantitative, industry validated method like the Port Environmental Index (PEI) presented in this article. The PEI integrates various environmental aspects of port operations into a single metric for assessing performance and facilitating inter-port comparison.

Driving forces of temporal-spatial differences in CO2 emissions at the city level for China's transport sector

Yuxiang Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the driving factors behind temporal and spatial differences in CO2 emissions for China's transportation sector, using LMDI and M-R models to analyze changes over time and differences across 15 cities. Results show that income and transportation intensity are key factors influencing CO2 emissions, while multiple factors contribute to differences among cities.

Drivers of household decarbonization: Decoupling and decomposition analysis

Litong Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found a decarbonization trend in urban areas in China, particularly showing strong decoupling during 2007-2008, while the trend was not discernible in rural areas. Significant decarbonization trends were observed in urban areas of heavily industrialized and renewables-based provinces, as well as rural areas of developed provinces.

Assessing travel satisfaction in public transport: A configurational approach

Alexandre Sukhov et al.

Summary: Research has shown that satisfaction with public transport service quality attributes is linked to overall travel satisfaction, with varying importance in different contexts. High travel satisfaction is found to occur through the interaction between service quality attributes, leading to different configurations of satisfaction. Context is shown to impact overall travel satisfaction. This study suggests that a configurational approach is useful for understanding the complexity of travel satisfaction.

Potential of modal shift from private cars to public transport: A survey on the commuters' attitudes and willingness to switch - A case study of Silesia Province, Poland

Anna Urbanek

Summary: The research results show that economic factors are not very effective in changing transport behaviors, while psychological factors are decisive for the unwillingness to switch to public transport. Increasing the modal share of public transport in daily commuting requires simultaneous and complex actions to improve public transport quality and increase the burden of using private cars.
