Flexibility evaluation of wind-PV-hydro multi-energy complementary base considering the compensation ability of cascade hydropower stations

Mingzhe Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method for evaluating the flexibility of watershed-type wind-PV-hydro multi-energy complementary bases (WMCB), considering the complementary characteristics of cascade hydropower stations. The method quantifies the flexible supply of hydropower and the flexibility demand of wind-PV power, and analyzes the impact of wind-PV power capacity improvement on system flexibility. The case study results indicate the suitable wind-PV power capacity ratio, as well as the potential for wind-PV power capacity development with additional flexibility resources.

Harmonics propagation and interaction evaluation in small-scale wind farms and hydroelectric generating systems

Ziwen Zhao et al.

Summary: This study establishes a model of hydro-wind complementary generation system and investigates the propagation and interaction of harmonics in all components. The results show that the integration of hydroelectric generating system affects the harmonics, and the analysis of odd harmonics interactions identifies high-risk sources in the system. The findings are important for power quality evaluation of hydro-wind complementary generation system.

Coordinative frequency-constrained unit commitment model for HVDC interconnected AC systems

Sufan Jiang et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a coordinative frequency-constrained unit commitment model to manage frequency stability after credible contingency with bulk power loss, along with a robust enhanced emergency frequency control strategy and an AC-DC response model. Furthermore, an improved algorithm is developed to solve emergency control and power rescheduling problems.

Metrics for determining the frequency stability limits of a power system: A GB case study

Marcel Nedd et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the challenges of frequency management in a power system with significant non-synchronous sources of power, proposing three metrics for quantifying containment limits. It highlights the importance of considering factors such as inertia in addition to penetration of non-synchronous dispatch. Two alternative approaches based on critical inertia and components of frequency stability constraints are suggested to improve quantifying containment limits and understanding key factors influencing frequency containment.

Flexibility assessment of a hybrid power system: Hydroelectric units in balancing the injection of wind power

Jingjing Zhang et al.

Summary: With the increasing scale of wind energy connected to the power grid, the impact of flexibility resources provided by hydroelectric units on flexibility performance becomes increasingly important. A mathematical model is developed to quantitatively analyze the effects of different reserve ratios and line distances on flexibility, providing a reference for the dispatching department to evaluate the required flexibility.

A review of dynamic models and stability analysis for a hydro-turbine governing system

Beibei Xu et al.

Summary: Hydropower, as a highly flexible and low-carbon generation method, plays an important role in balancing high levels of wind and solar penetration in electricity grids. However, challenges arise when hydropower is operated flexibly in part-load, overload, or transient conditions, such as improving load measurement and control in the hydro-turbine governing system (HTGS). The review identifies three main challenges in increasing the flexible use of HTGS on the grid: integrating the HTGS and shaft model, developing control methods for HTGS with intermittent renewable energies, and addressing the uncertain nature of load on the overall performance and stability of the hydropower system.

Potential assessment of large-scale hydro-photovoltaic-wind hybrid systems on a global scale

Zhenni Wang et al.

Summary: A study found that large-scale hydro-photovoltaic-wind hybrid systems have a total potential installed capacity of 1699 GW and an annual electricity generation of 4348 TW-hours, playing an important role in the global energy transition. The Asia-Pacific region has the largest potential, with fluctuation ratios of hybrid systems lower by 78-99% compared to independent systems, and integrating wind and PV power into hydropower can increase the average utilization efficiency of transmission networks.
