Overcoming decision paralysis-A digital twin for decision making in energy system design

Julia Granacher et al.

Summary: The proposed methodology introduces an Interactive Digital Twin (InDiT) for process and energy system design, which translates decision makers' needs and preferences into an optimization-based model and generates meaningful solutions. InDiT enhances communication with decision makers through visual aids, guiding them in exploring solution spaces and making relevant system design decisions, while taking multiple aspects into consideration.

Optimal operation of Concentrating Solar Collector fields using exergy-based hierarchical control

Diogo Ortiz Machado et al.

Summary: This study develops an exergy-based hierarchical control for the ACUREX solar collector field. The control can track references, reject disturbances, and optimize production considering operational constraints and intermittent processes. The findings suggest that the proposed exergy-based controller design provides improved thermodynamic performance and is a suitable strategy for the ACUREX solar field.

Split-range control for improved operation of solar absorption cooling plants

Diogo Ortiz Machado et al.

Summary: This paper proposes the first application of a split-range control technique on a concentrating solar collector to improve the production of an absorption plant. Control techniques are simulated and compared in an absorption plant in Spain. The results demonstrate that the proposed controllers significantly reduce the effort of control actuators and improve energy and exergy production.

Co-optimization of multi-energy system operation, district heating/cooling network and thermal comfort management for buildings

Lavinia Marina Paola Ghilardi et al.

Summary: The study focuses on optimizing thermal comfort management for buildings with a Multi Energy System by utilizing the heat capacity of buildings and increasing the operational flexibility of generators. Testing results demonstrate that small temperature fluctuations around the indoor temperature setpoint and optimizing water delivery temperature can reduce operating costs, while the load shift capability of buildings plays a significant role when thermal demand mismatches energy supply.
