Active oxygen promoted electrochemical conversion of methane on two-dimensional carbide (MXenes): From stability, reactivity and selectivity

Yikun Kang et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of active oxygen (O*) on electrochemical methane conversion on 66 two-dimensional carbides (MXenes) through large-scale computations. The results showed that materials satisfying the stability condition of O* in the OER activity volcano map have potential application in methane conversion. Additionally, it was found that the p-band center of O* serves as an effective descriptor for catalyst design in terms of stability and reactivity.

Potential Dependence of the Local pH in a CO2 Reduction Electrolyzer

Danielle A. Henckel et al.

Summary: The study found that the local pH of a gas diffusion electrode undergoing CO2 reduction is significantly lower than the bulk electrolyte pH, showing dependence on applied potential. The decrease in pH is attributed to the formation of malachite from soluble Cu(II) species on the initially oxidized electrode surface.

Single-step selective oxidation of methane to methanol in the aqueous phase on iridium-based catalysts

Mengwei Li et al.

Summary: In this work, a one-step conversion of methane to methanol using molecular oxygen as the oxidant in aqueous solutions with the presence of CO on copper or palladium-promoted Ir-ZSM-5 catalyst is reported. The addition of a second metal to Ir-ZSM-5 enhances catalyst activity and tunes product selectivity. The trimetallic system IrCuPd shows the best performance for methanol formation with good stability in cyclic operation.

Fundamental insight into electrochemical oxidation of methane towards methanol on transition metal oxides

Aditya Prajapati et al.

Summary: The inefficient electrochemical oxidation of CH4 in aqueous electrolytes is primarily due to the dominant oxygen evolution reaction and the high activation barrier of CH4 on transition metal oxides. By studying the electrostatic potential of metal atoms in TMOs, a new explanation for the origins of lower activity of methane oxidation reaction on TMOs has been developed. New strategies for partially oxidizing CH4 to CH3OH have been proposed based on the findings.

Methane Oxidation to Methanol in Water

Simon J. Freakley et al.

Summary: Methane oxidation to methanol is a challenging topic due to high energy barriers and prevention of overoxidation to CO2. Over the past 50 years, low-temperature selective methane oxidation to methanol has remained an active area of research. Studies show that using molecular oxygen is more ideal, but there are still challenges in research on this aspect.

Highly efficient conversion of methane to formic acid under mild conditions at ZSM-5-confined Fe-sites

Kaixin Zhu et al.

Summary: This study introduces a highly selective and efficient method for methane conversion to formic acid by confining atomically dispersed Fe sites in the nano-channels of ZSM-5. The research demonstrates that the confined Fe-O active centers within ZSM-5 can dissociate C-H bonds and catalyze the oxidation of methane to formic acid via free radical mechanisms under mild conditions. This innovative approach opens up a new path for engineering the microenvironment of confined Fe sites within nanochannels for highly selective methane conversion with low energy input.
