Electrochemical Carbon Dioxide Capture and Release with a Redox-Active Amine

Hyowon Seo et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic carbon dioxide emission is a major cause of global climate change and ocean acidification. Carbon capture and storage technologies have been proposed to reduce the accumulation of this greenhouse gas. Direct air capture is seen as a viable method to achieve net negative emissions. However, separating CO2 from air is particularly challenging due to its low concentration compared to dioxygen and water.

Carbon-efficient carbon dioxide electrolysers

Adnan Ozden et al.

Summary: Renewable electricity-powered CO2 electroreduction is a sustainable approach for transforming the chemical industry. The authors provide an overview of four CO2 electrolysis pathways that could overcome the major technological barrier of carbonate formation. CO2 electroreduction (CO2R) is a promising technology for converting CO2 into renewable fuels and feedstocks, supporting the transition from fossil to renewable sources in the chemical industry. However, carbonate formation and energy costs currently limit the viability of CO2R technology.

Summary: This Perspective discusses the potential of electrification as an approach to reduce carbon emissions in the chemical industry. The authors analyze the current CO2 emissions in manufacturing and survey state-of-the-art electrosynthesis methods in three emission-intensive areas. They identify technical bottlenecks in electrifying chemical production and propose strategies to overcome these issues. The authors also provide their views on how electrochemical manufacturing can contribute to reducing carbon emissions, with the aim of inspiring further research efforts in this field.

How the surface state of nickel/gadolinium-doped ceria cathodes influences the electrochemical performance in direct CO2 electrolysis

Dingkai Chen et al.

Summary: The study examined the influence of surface state on the electrochemical performance of nickel gadolinium-doped ceria (NiGDC) cermet electrodes in direct CO2 electrolysis using operando near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy combined with on-line gas phase and electrical measurements. The results provided insights into the dynamic evolution of the electrode surface, side reactions associated with electrode activation in CO2 electrolysis, and the essential role of metallic nickel in CO2 electoreduction. In situ reduction of NiO upon polarization in CO2 was also observed, challenging the necessity of adding reductive gases for maintaining the cermet electrode in the reduced state. Additionally, improved i-V characteristics of NiGDC electrodes in direct CO2 electrolysis were demonstrated compared to CO2/H2 fuel conditions, with the behavior rationalized based on NAP-XPS results.

Effect of the PH2O/PCO2 and PH2 on the intrinsic electro-catalytic interactions and the CO production pathway on Ni/GDC during solid oxide H2O/CO2 co-electrolysis

E. Ioannidou et al.

Summary: The study revealed competitive adsorption and electro-reduction between H2O and CO2 during the co-electrolysis process, which is determined by the PH2O/PCO2 ratio and PH2 value. The electrolysis process is 100% selective towards H2O at a PH2O/PCO2 ratio of 1 and high PH2 value of 21 kPa, while CO production is catalytically controlled by the RWGS reaction.

Ni migration of Ni-YSZ electrode in solid oxide electrolysis cell: An integrated model study

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Through a comprehensive numerical study, it was found that nickel depletion in the fuel electrode of SOEC can lead to nickel phase coarsening, consequently reducing the electrochemical performance of the electrode. Increasing the wettability of the nickel phase can effectively mitigate the reduction of active reaction sites caused by nickel coarsening.

Enabling thermal-neutral electrolysis for CO2-to-fuel conversions with a hybrid deep learning strategy

Haoran Xu et al.

Summary: A hybrid simulation method is proposed for the accurate and fast optimization of the co-electrolysis process in SOECs, with a focus on thermal-neutral condition as the target. The smallest peak-temperature-gradients inside the SOEC are found to be crucial for preventing thermal failure in operation at the thermal-neutral condition.
