Unsupported MoS2-Based Catalysts for Bio-Oil Hydrodeoxygenation: Recent Advances and Future Perspectives

Jing Cao et al.

Summary: This mini-review focuses on the recent development of unsupported MoS2-based HDO catalysts from the understanding of catalyst design. The three aspects including morphology and defect engineering, metal doping, and deactivation mechanism are highlighted in adjusting the HDO performance of MoS2-based catalysts. Finally, the key challenges and future perspectives about how to design efficient catalysts are also summarized in the conclusions.

Hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol via in situ H2 generated through a water gas shift reaction over dispersed NiMoS catalysts from oil-soluble precursors: Tuning the selectivity towards cyclohexene

A. V. Vutolkina et al.

Summary: Efficient hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol via in situ hydrogen generated through Water Gas Shift (WGS) reaction over nanosized unsupported NiMoS catalysts with tunable selectivity toward cyclohexene was reported. The reaction offers a direct reaction route for oxygen-containing compounds from bio-oils depending on catalyst precursors and reaction conditions. The proposed reaction routes and mechanisms for hydrodeoxygenation of guaiacol were also discussed.

Theoretical insight into the hydrogenolysis mechanism of lignin dimer compounds based on experiments

Chen Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, the cleavage mechanism of C-O bonds in lignin dimers was investigated using density functional theory (DFT) calculation. The most probable reaction site involving hydrogen free radicals was predicted using the Fukui function, with O atoms in lignin dimers identified as the main reaction site due to their large f (0) values.

Hydrodeoxygenation of Diphenyl Ether over an In Situ NiMoS Catalyst

T. S. Kuchinskaya et al.

Summary: The study investigated the activity of an in situ nanosized NiMoS catalyst in the hydrodeoxygenation of diphenyl ether, identifying the effects of reaction temperature and composition on the conversion rate and product composition. The catalyst showed 100% conversion rate at a substrate : Mo molar ratio of 10.5:1, with analysis done using transmission electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

Hydrotreatment of lignin dimers over NiMoS-USY: effect of silica/alumina ratio

Muhammad Abdus Salam et al.

Summary: The study found that NiMoY30 exhibited the highest hydrogenolysis activity for etheric C-O bonds, despite NiMoY12 showing a higher initial cleavage rate. Additionally, NiMoY30 showed good hydrodeoxygenation and cracking reactions, resulting in a higher yield of deoxygenated products. Even with lower acidity, NiMoY80 was able to rapidly cleave the methylene-linked C-C dimer. Overall, the balance of acidity and pore accessibility in NiMoY30 led to effective breaking of recalcitrant linkages in lignin, producing a liquid transportation fuel rich in hydrocarbons.
