Week-Old Chicks with High Bacteroides Abundance Have Increased Short-Chain Fatty Acids and Reduced Markers of Gut Inflammation

Yi Fan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that having a microbiome with elevated levels of Bacteroides in early life may have beneficial effects on the chicken host, specifically in improving short-chain fatty acid production and gut health. However, limited information is available regarding the comparison of Bacteroides compositions in the chicken gut microbial communities and their impact on microbial functionality and host responses.

Stochastic microbiome assembly depends on context

Eric W. Jones et al.

Summary: Observational studies show significant variability in microbiome composition among individuals, with interactions between bacteria affecting the microbiome assembly process. In experiments with germ-free flies fed known bacterial species at high concentrations, it was found that some species colonize more frequently than others. The presence of context-dependent interactions between bacterial species can substantially improve the performance of models in predicting colonization outcomes.

Microbiome differential abundance methods produce different results across 38 datasets

Jacob T. Nearing et al.

Summary: Identifying differentially abundant microbes is a common goal in microbiome studies. However, there are few studies systematically comparing the performance of different methods. This study compares 14 differential abundance testing methods and finds that ALDEx2 and ANCOM-II produce the most consistent results.

Characterizing the chicken gut colonization ability of a diverse group of bacteria

Binita Poudel et al.

Summary: The development of probiotics for chickens is a rapidly growing field. The current main approach is to administer probiotics through the bird's life, usually through feed incorporation. This study reports two colonization experiments using 14 different bacterial strains, and finds that some strains are able to colonize chicks after a single exposure. Fecal samples are shown to be useful for identifying and understanding colonization dynamics.

Effects of early-life cecal microbiota transplantation from divergently selected inbred chicken lines on growth, gut serotonin, and immune parameters in recipient chickens

Yuechi Fu et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that fecal microbiota transplantation can improve stress-related inflammation and gastrointestinal health. This study aimed to investigate the effects of cecal microbiota transplantation on egg-laying strain chickens. The results showed that chickens receiving cecal transplantation from different donors exhibited different patterns of growth and health status.

Fecal Microbiota Transplantation Reshapes the Physiological Function of the Intestine in Antibiotic-Treated Specific Pathogen-Free Birds

Peng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between intestinal flora and intestinal physiology in birds. An antibiotic-treated specific pathogen-free (SPF) bird model was used to study the differences in intestinal absorption, barrier, immune, antioxidant, and metabolic functions between bird with and without intestinal bacteria. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) was also performed to study the effect of intestinal flora transplantation on the intestinal physiology. The results show that intestinal flora plays an important role in regulating the physiological functions of the intestine.

A standardized gnotobiotic mouse model harboring a minimal 15-member mouse gut microbiota recapitulates SOPF/SPF phenotypes

Marion Darnaud et al.

Summary: The authors developed and characterized a mouse microbiota model composed of 15 strains representative of C57BL/6J specific opportunistic- and pathogen-free mice, deriving a standardized gnotobiotic mouse model named GM15. This model recapitulates SOPF or SPF animal phenotypes and shows improved reproducibility across different animal facilities. The GM15 model offers opportunities for research on how the microbiota influences host physiology in health and disease, providing a more stable platform for preclinical studies.

Effect of a Humanized Diet Profile on Colonization Efficiency and Gut Microbial Diversity in Human Flora-Associated Mice

Summary: HFA mouse models allow for research on human disease interventions and exploring the commensal microbiome. A study compared colonization efficiency and gut microbial diversity in mice fed a CFD or a PFD, finding differences in efficiency and metabolic pathways between the two diets. This suggests that CFD and PFD can help establish human microbiotas in mice for researching human-derived intestinal diseases.

Chao Yan et al.

Summary: The study found that transferring fecal microbiota from aged broilers donors to recipients can improve body weight, behavior, intestinal development, and gut microbiota composition. Fearfulness was higher in the control group compared to the broiler recipient group, while intestinal development indicators were also higher in the BR group. Beta diversity of gut microbiota showed differences between the CK and BR groups.

Early-Life Immune System Maturation in Chickens Using a Synthetic Community of Cultured Gut Bacteria

Christian Zenner et al.

Summary: The gut microbiome plays a crucial role in the maturation of the immune system in chickens, and exposure to maternal feces after hatching has been shown to increase levels of IgA and IgY, along with gut bacterial diversity. A collection of 43 bacterial species, including novel genera and species, was established through cultivation work, and a synthetic community designed from this collection was moderately efficient in boosting immunoglobulin levels in chickens.
