Sarracenia pitcher plant-associated microbial communities differ primarily by host species across a longitudinal gradient

Jacob A. Heil et al.

Summary: Plant-associated microbial communities are influenced by both geography and host species. Geography plays a role mainly in different sampling sites, while host species directly affect the structure and abundances of microbial communities.

Characterization and Comparison of Convergence Among Cephalotus follicularis Pitcher Plant-Associated Communities With Those of Nepenthes and Sarracenia Found Worldwide

Leonora S. Bittleston et al.

Summary: The Albany pitcher plant, Cephalotus follicularis, is a species that has evolved cup-shaped leaves and a carnivorous habit independently from other pitcher plants. Metabarcoding was used to analyze the bacterial and eukaryotic communities in C. follicularis. The study found correlations between bacterial and eukaryotic communities in terms of richness and composition, but the factors associated with richness differed between bacteria and eukaryotes. The variation in composition was primarily influenced by fluid acidity, fluid color, and sampling site. The study also revealed similarities in richness between C. follicularis and other pitcher plants, as well as shared bacterial taxa across independent lineages of pitcher plants.

Capture of mammal excreta by Nepenthes is an effective heterotrophic nutrition strategy

Adam T. Cross et al.

Summary: The carnivorous plant Nepenthes effectively gains heterotrophic nitrogen by collecting mammal faeces. Species with adaptations for capturing mammal excreta occur mainly at high elevations where invertebrate prey is scarce, maximizing nutrient acquisition.

The microbiome extends host evolutionary potential

Lucas P. Henry et al.

Summary: The article discusses how the microbiome influences host evolution, proposes that integrating microbiome into quantitative genetics can help unravel the complexity of host-microbiome evolution, and describes the two general ways in which the microbiome may affect host evolutionary potential.

Strategic traits of bacteria and archaea vary widely within substrate-use groups

Mark Westoby et al.

Summary: Quantitative traits such as maximum growth rate and substrate-use pathways play important roles in ecological strategy variation across bacteria and archaea. This study found that within specific substrate-use pathways, the variation in quantitative traits was extensive, outweighing differences between substrate-use groups. Thus, these quantitative traits likely provide different and complementary information about ecological strategy compared to substrate use.
