Botrytis cinerea infection accelerates ripening and cell wall disassembly to promote disease in tomato fruit

Christian Silva et al.

Summary: Postharvest fungal pathogen Botrytis cinerea actively induces ripening in tomato fruit to facilitate infection, depending on the presence of two fungal polygalacturonases. It accelerates external coloration, ethylene production, and softening in unripe fruit while upregulating host genes involved in ripening processes. Glycomic analysis also showed similar changes in cell wall polysaccharides between infected unripe fruit and ripe healthy fruit. The failure to accelerate ripening severely inhibits fungal survival on unripe fruit.

Coating properties, resistance response, molecular mechanisms and anthracnose decay reduction in green skin avocado fruit ('Fuerte') coated with chitosan hydrochloride loaded with functional compounds

Hasten Aloy A. Osondu et al.

Summary: The study revealed that chitosan hydrochloride coating loaded with vanillic acid or caffeic acid can effectively control anthracnose decay in avocados, reduce decay occurrence to a lesser extent, and provide some protection for fruit quality. This coating may achieve these effects by inducing the expression of specific genes, increasing skin epicatechin content, and reducing LOX expression in the fruit. Additionally, the complex of chitosan and phytochemicals may help prevent fungal invasion and reduce fruit damage.

Untangling the role of ethylene beyond fruit development and ripening: A physiological and molecular perspective focused on the Monilinia-peach interaction

Nuria Vall-llaura et al.

Summary: Ethylene plays a crucial role in the growth and ripening of peach fruit and is involved in the plant's response to abiotic stresses and pathogens. However, the mechanism of interaction between peach and Monilinia fungi is still unclear. Recent studies suggest that ethylene plays an important role in this interaction, but its effect depends on the fruit's developmental stage and the virulence of the Monilinia species or strain.

Effect of combined hypobaric and cold storage on defense-related enzymes in postharvest peach fruit during ripening

Xiaoqin Wu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of hypobaric treatment on the postharvest physiology of peach fruit. The results showed that hypobaric treatment can maintain firmness, delay respiration peak, increase respiration rate, and inhibit certain enzyme activities. SOD and PPO played a vital role in peach cell defense under hypobaric conditions.

Chitosan and other edible coatings to extend shelf life, manage postharvest decay, and reduce loss and waste of fresh fruits and vegetables

Gianfranco Romanazzi et al.

Summary: Fresh fruits and vegetables continue metabolic activity after harvest, leading to ripening, increased susceptibility to decay-causing fungi, and consequent loss and waste. Edible coatings can reduce waste, respect the environment, and benefit consumer health. They act as a protective agent, extending shelf life, and have the potential to control ripening and maintain nutritional properties of fresh produce.

Preharvest sprays with sodium nitroprusside induce resistance in harvested muskmelon against the pink rot disease

Bin Wang et al.

Summary: Pink rot caused by Trichothecium roseum is a significant postharvest disease of muskmelon, leading to substantial losses. The application of sodium nitroprusside (SNP) during fruit development reduced decay incidence and lesion area, while also affecting antioxidant enzymes and the phenylpropanoid pathway. Preharvest SNP sprays showed promising results in enhancing resistance and reducing postharvest losses, indicating a potential new approach for controlling muskmelon diseases.

Regulation of wound ethylene biosynthesis by NAC transcription factors in kiwifruit

Niels J. Nieuwenhuizen et al.

Summary: In kiwifruit, the transcriptional regulation of ethylene biosynthesis is different between leaves and fruit after mechanical wounding. Ethylene biosynthesis in fruit is accompanied by transcriptional increases in ACS, ACO, and NAC TFs, while in kiwifruit leaves, wound-specific transcriptional increases are largely absent, suggesting post-transcriptional control mechanisms are more important. The NAC TFs AcNAC2-4 regulate both system-1 and -2 ethylene biosynthesis in fruit through control of AcACS1 expression levels, but not in leaves where post-transcriptional/translational regulatory mechanisms may prevail.
