The Chinese Carbon-Neutral Goal: Challenges and Prospects

Ning Zeng et al.

Summary: China has announced its climate goal to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. However, the pathway to decarbonization is unclear and there are significant differences in achieving the carbon-neutral goal, particularly regarding non-fossil fuel energy sources. Near-term policies allowing for gradual transition and drastic changes after 2030 can eventually achieve the carbon-neutral goal.

Regional energy diversity and sovereignty in different 2 °C and 1.5 °C pathways

A. F. Hof et al.

Summary: The study shows that energy supply diversity increases in deep mitigation scenarios in practically all regions, especially in India and China. This is due to strong growth of bioenergy and intermittent renewables, together with less fossil fuel use. Additionally, there is a substantial decrease in total energy trade in mitigation scenarios with a strong focus on intermittent renewables.

Assessing the rapidly-emerging landscape of net zero targets

Thomas Hale et al.

Summary: In the five years since the Paris Agreement, achieving net zero emissions has become a defining frame for climate action. However, among over 4000 countries, companies, and subnational governments, only 152 have set net zero targets that meet minimum criteria for robustness. The implementation of net zero targets is still in its infancy, and there is a need for policymakers to prioritize making these targets more robust in order to deliver Paris-consistent action and secure more ambitious goals.

Realization of Paris Agreement pledges may limit warming just below 2 °C

Malte Meinshausen et al.

Summary: Over the past five years, many countries have submitted their new or updated mitigation goals for 2030, with some also making longer-term pledges. A study suggests that if all these pledges are fully implemented and on time, warming can be kept just below 2 degrees Celsius. However, achieving this goal will require urgent and significant emission reductions in this decade, leading to global net-zero CO2 emissions by the mid-century.

Ratcheting of climate pledges needed to limit peak global warming

Gokul Iyer et al.

Summary: Increasing ambition in the near term, particularly through 2030, is crucial for limiting global warming to below 1.5 degrees C. This will bring significant climate benefits and facilitate faster transitions to net-zero emissions systems.

Updated nationally determined contributions collectively raise ambition levels but need strengthening further to keep Paris goals within reach

Michel G. J. den Elzen et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the greenhouse gas emissions and macroeconomic impacts of the new NDCs submitted by 156 countries. The results show that while these new NDCs contribute to additional reductions in global emissions by 2030, achieving the climate goals of the Paris Agreement still requires a significant increase in emission reductions.

Developing scenarios in the context of the Paris Agreement and application in the integrated assessment model IMAGE: A framework for bridging the policy-modelling divide

Mark Roelfsema et al.

Summary: The framework presented in this study aims to provide transparency and understanding of climate policy in integrated assessment models. It categorizes policy aims and implementation at different stages, and can be used to link international and national-level climate policy scenarios. The framework's application is demonstrated in the IMAGE model.

Carbon fluxes from land 2000-2020: bringing clarity to countries' reporting

Giacomo Grassi et al.

Summary: Despite the large range of estimates in available databases, a new data compilation of carbon fluxes from land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF) provides a consolidated view on the subject. The database is based on a detailed analysis of national greenhouse gas inventories communicated to the UNFCCC and aims to increase confidence in land-based climate change mitigation efforts.

Targeted Green Recovery Measures in a Post-COVID-19 World Enable the Energy Transition

Ioannis Dafnomilis et al.

Summary: Despite significant fiscal recovery measures in response to COVID-19, most plans allocate a low percentage to green recovery. However, a Green Recovery scenario with 1% of global GDP in fiscal support directed towards mitigation measures for 3 years could significantly reduce global CO2 emissions and accelerate the uptake of renewables and electric vehicles.

Towards carbon neutrality: A study on China's long-term low-carbon transition pathways and strategies

Jiankun He et al.

Summary: As the world's largest carbon emitter, China must make significant efforts to peak its emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. This study examines different scenarios and evaluates the pathways, energy transformation, technology, policy, and investment demands necessary for carbon neutrality. The findings highlight the challenges and investment requirements for China to achieve its carbon neutrality goals.

A multidimensional feasibility evaluation of low-carbon scenarios

Elina Brutschin et al.

Summary: The study proposes a multidimensional framework for evaluating and comparing decarbonization pathways, taking into account geophysical, technological, economic, socio-cultural, and institutional considerations. Institutional constraints are identified as key drivers of feasibility concerns, with early mitigation being potentially more disruptive but preventing long-term feasibility issues caused by postponed actions.

Wave of net zero emission targets opens window to meeting the Paris Agreement

Niklas Hoehne et al.

Summary: National net zero emission targets, if fully implemented, could significantly lower global greenhouse gas emissions and bring the Paris Agreement temperature goal within reach. However, current emissions reduction pledges are insufficient to meet the targets set by the Paris Agreement. The wave of net zero targets being discussed and adopted by countries could potentially make the Paris goal possible.
