Background independence and field redefinitions in quantum gravity

Roberto Casadio et al.

Summary: This passage points out that a full-fledged theory of quantum gravity should possess background independence and diffeomorphism invariance. However, any path-integral approach to quantum gravity leads to a tension between these properties, making it impossible to satisfy them simultaneously.

Thermal gauge theories with Lagrange multiplier fields

F. T. Brandt et al.

Summary: This study examines the Yang-Mills theory and quantum gravity at finite temperature, with the inclusion of Lagrange multiplier fields. These fields restrict the configurations of paths integrals to follow the classical equations of motion. As a result, the usual one-loop thermal contributions are doubled, and all higher-loop order radiative corrections are suppressed. These theories are renormalizable at all temperatures, and some implications of this result in quantum gravity are briefly explored.

Ghosts without Runaway Instabilities

Cedric Deffayet et al.

Summary: In this study, we introduce a class of mechanical models with a canonical degree of freedom interacting with a ghost. Analytically, we prove that the classical motion of the system is completely stable for all initial conditions, contradicting the common belief that systems with negative kinetic terms are unstable.

Modified theories of gravity: Why, how and what?

S. Shankaranarayanan et al.

Summary: This review discusses three aspects of modified gravity (MG) theories: why we need to consider MG theories, how to modify general relativity (GR), and the observational consequences. The review aims to serve as a reference for theorists, observers, and those interested in bridging the gap between theory and observations, by exploring the differences between GR and modified gravity theories.

On restricting first order form of gauge theories to one-loop order

F. T. Brandt et al.

Summary: The quantization of the first order form of the Yang-Mills and Einstein-Hilbert actions is discussed in this paper, and it is shown that by introducing Lagrange multiplier fields, radiative effects beyond one-loop order can be eliminated to maintain unitarity of the theory.

Reconsidering the Ostrogradsky theorem: higher-derivatives Lagrangians, ghosts and degeneracy

Alexander Ganz et al.

Summary: The paper reviews the fate of the Ostrogradsky ghost in higher-order theories, starting from the instability caused by higher-derivatives Lagrangians in classical mechanics. It explores the possibility to evade the Ostrogradsky instability by using 'degenerate' Lagrangians, and explains that higher-derivatives Lagrangians do not necessarily lead to the propagation of an Ostrogradsky ghost. Additionally, quantum aspects and the subtleties of Ostrogradsky instabilities in higher order covariant theories are also studied.
