Market orientation in uncertain environments: The enabling role of effectuation orientation in new product development

Somayeh Taghvaee et al.

Summary: While uncertainty is generally seen as negative, research shows that market-oriented firms can achieve better new product performance in uncertain market conditions. However, little is known about how organizational factors enable firms to benefit from uncertainty through marketing activities. This study introduces effectuation and its corporate-level concept of effectuation orientation (EffO) as a moderator between market orientation (MO) and new product performance in uncertain markets. The empirical findings confirm that dimensions of EffO (except for affordable loss orientation) strengthen the relationship between MO and new product performance in uncertain markets.
