Significance of serum Th1/Th2 cytokine levels in underlying disease classification of childhood HLH

Xiao-Xi Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated serum cytokine levels in childhood HLH with different triggers, finding differences in levels among HLH groups and meaningful ratios between cytokines for distinguishing HLH types. However, combining these parameters didn't offer the optimal balance between sensitivity and specificity. Additional data is needed to accurately identify specific underlying diseases using cytokine levels.

Cytokine profile, ferritin and multi-visceral involvement characterize macrophage activation syndrome during adult-onset Still's disease

Piero Ruscitti et al.

Summary: The study found that in patients with adult-onset Still's disease complicated by macrophage activation syndrome, levels of cytokines (IL-1, IL-6, IFN-gamma, etc.) and inflammatory markers (ferritin) were elevated. Analysis of circulating immune cells in MAS patients showed an increase in 'classical monocytes' and a reduction in total NK cells. A total of 3477 IFN-related genes were identified in AOSD synovial tissues.

Simple Evaluation of Clinical Situation and Subtypes of Pediatric Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis by Cytokine Patterns

Xiao-Jun Xu et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the cytokine patterns of different subtypes of pediatric HLH and the role of cytokines in evaluating disease features. The results showed that there were differences in cytokine levels among different HLH subtypes, and IFN-gamma and IL-10/IFN-gamma ratio were useful tools for differentiating HLH subtypes. A four-quadrant model based on these parameters provided a simple evaluation of the HLH situation.

MCP-1: Function, regulation, and involvement in disease

Sanjiv Singh et al.

Summary: MCP-1 plays a crucial role in inflammation by attracting or enhancing the expression of other inflammatory factors/cells, leading to the development of various diseases. It is elevated in COVID-19 patients and associated with disease severity.

Cytokine IP-10 and GM-CSF are prognostic biomarkers for severity in secondary dengue infection

S. Gowri Sankar et al.

Summary: The study revealed a higher incidence of severe symptoms in primary dengue infections, with children being more prone to severe symptoms in secondary infections. IP-10 and GM-CSF expression was significantly upregulated in serum samples from secondary infections, showing a strong correlation with disease severity indicators.

Targeting GM-CSF in inflammatory and autoimmune disorders

Adrian A. Achuthan et al.

Summary: GM-CSF is a growth factor that promotes the differentiation and proliferation of bone marrow progenitor cells and has diverse biological functions including inflammation and pain mediation. Experimental studies suggest that GM-CSF could be a potential target in various inflammatory and autoimmune disorders.
