Using Anticipatory Behavior as Preference Test in The Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)

Recently, anticipatory behavior has been discovered as a way to detect animals' preference. This study investigated the relationship between preference and anticipatory behavior by testing dolphins. Testing use of the first multi-partner cognitive enrichment devices by a group of male bottlenose dolphins

Summary: Alliance formation is crucial in male dolphins' lives, and partner choice and relationship maintenance are key components of this process. A study found that pairs of adult male dolphins had a high success rate in cooperatively manipulating cognitive enrichment devices. The introduction of two novel devices allowed for simultaneous actions by two or more dolphins, and the dolphins showed successful cooperation in opening the devices in the majority of the trials. Cooperative play was observed, primarily between one pair of dolphins temporarily associated with a third or fourth dolphin. These findings provide insights into the social organization of male dolphin groups.

A fast technique to induce and measure anticipatory behavior in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus)

Summary: Anticipatory behavior refers to actions taken to prepare for an upcoming event. This study tested the effectiveness of a new technique, called The Fast Technique (TFT), in inducing and measuring anticipatory behavior without animal training. The results showed that TFT was able to elicit and measure anticipatory behavior towards the studied event, and produced the same results as the Classical Technique (TCT) that requires training. This finding demonstrates the efficacy of a new technique that could facilitate the use of anticipatory behavior in research and animal welfare assessment protocols.
