Moisture-activated deep eutectic electrolyte enabling stable metal Zn anode

Yihua Xie et al.

Summary: Rechargeable aqueous Zn-ion batteries with metal Zn anodes have cost-effectiveness, intrinsic safety, and high energy density. However, their practical application is hindered by limited cycling reversibility of the metal Zn anode. A moisture-activated non-flammable deep eutectic electrolyte is developed, which suppresses water-induced side reactions, dendrite formation, and improves Zn2+ transport, leading to a dendrite-free Zn anode with long-term cycling lifespan and high Coulombic efficiency.

Taming Solvent-Solute Interaction Accelerates Interfacial Kinetics in Low-Temperature Lithium-Metal Batteries

Cheng-Bin Jin et al.

Summary: Lithium (Li)-metal batteries suffer severe capacity deterioration at extreme temperatures due to increased kinetic barrier of interfacial processes. This study quantitatively probes the interfacial kinetics in three different electrolytes and reveals that desolvation is the limiting step dominating the cell impedance and capacity at low temperature. The use of a 1,3-dioxolane-based electrolyte with tamed solvent-solute interaction facilitates fast desolvation and enables practical Li|LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 cells at -40 degrees C to retain 66% of room-temperature capacity and withstand fast charging rates. The barrier of desolvation dictated by solvent-solute interaction environments is quantitatively uncovered, and regulating this interaction emerges as a promising solution to low-temperature batteries.

Chloride electrolyte enabled practical zinc metal battery with a near-unity Coulombic efficiency

Heng Jiang et al.

Summary: Rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries are gaining popularity in stationary storage applications due to their safety, cost-effectiveness, scalability, and low carbon footprint. However, the challenge of hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) at the zinc surface hinders the utilization of this reversible redox chemistry.
