Au@Cu2O core@shell nanocrystals as sustainable catalysts for efficient hydrogen production from ammonia borane

Mei-Jing Fang et al.

Summary: Au@Cu2O core@shell nanocrystals are demonstrated to be sustainable catalysts for efficient hydrogen production from ammonia borane (AB). By leveraging the core@shell structure and electronic interactions, Au@Cu2O shows remarkable performance in AB hydrolysis. The effect of shell thickness on hydrogen production and dehydrogenation of AB is investigated systematically. The research findings not only expand the family of metal/metal oxide composite catalysts for AB hydrolysis but also deepen the understanding of core@shell structural features and electronic interactions in AB dehydrogenation.

Pt loading to promote hydrogen evolution from ammonia-borane hydrolysis of Ni2P under visible light

Muhammad Asim et al.

Summary: A Pt@Ni2P catalyst is reported to enhance the hydrogen evolution rate from ammonia borane under both dark and visible light conditions. X-ray photoelectron spectrum analysis shows that the incorporation of Pt with Ni2P forms partially positive Pt delta+ and partially negative Ni2P delta- as active sites for ammonia borane and water, respectively. Visible light irradiation further accelerates the electron transfer from Pt delta+ to Ni2P delta-. Pt loading over Ni2P plays a vital role in improving the H2 evolution rate via ammonia borane hydrolysis.

Synergetic effect of Au nanoparticles and transition metal phosphides for enhanced hydrogen evolution from ammonia-borane

Muhammad Asim et al.

Summary: In this study, Au/Ni2P and Au/CoP catalysts were synthesized for ammonia borane hydrolysis, showing increased activity compared to Ni2P and CoP, respectively, due to the synergistic effect of Au nanoparticles and metal phosphides. XPS analysis revealed that the synergistic effect of Au5+ and (Ni2P)5- was stronger than that of Au5+ and (CoP)5-. Kinetic studies showed higher activation energy and lower TOF for Au/Ni2P compared to Au/CoP, providing an effective approach for enhancing the H2 evolution rate in ammonia borane hydrolysis.

Summary: A step-by-step reduction strategy was developed to synthesize small-sized bimetallic species supported on various metal oxide supports. The introduction of Co species significantly enhanced the catalytic activity of noble metals (e.g., Pt, Rh, Ru, and Pd) in ammonia borane hydrolysis reactions. The optimized Pt0.1%Co3%/TiO2 catalyst showed a high turnover frequency (TOF) value and outperformed monometallic Pt/TiO2 and commercial Pt/C catalysts in terms of H2 generation rate and stability.

Yuanyuan Zheng et al.

Summary: A scalable, controllable, and general strategy to prepare Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysts with excellent performance and stability was demonstrated. The Pt83Ni17 bunched-nanocages aerogels (BNCs AG) showed significantly enhanced ORR activity and durability compared to Pt/C, with mass activity (MA) of 1.95 A mg(Pt)(-1) and MA retention of 82.6% after a 20,000-cycles accelerated durability test. The optimized ligand and strain effects, as well as the appropriate porosity, contributed to the excellent activity and durability of the Pt83Ni17 BNCs AG.

Rational Design of Transition Metal Phosphide-Based Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution

Dong Liu et al.

Summary: Developing efficient and inexpensive electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is crucial for the commercial viability of electrochemical clean energy technologies. Transition metal phosphides (TMPs) have been recognized as attractive HER catalytic materials due to their abundant reserves, unique structure, tunable composition, and high electronic conductivity. However, the HER activity of TMPs is still limited by various issues and performance bottlenecks. This review addresses these issues, provides explanations and solutions based on the origins of HER catalytic activity in TMPs, presents strategies to improve HER performance, and proposes critical scientific issues for constructing high-efficiency TMP-based electrocatalysts. Challenges and future directions for this research field, including the HER reaction process, catalytic mechanism research, TMP-based catalyst construction, and application expansion, are also discussed.

Fast Au-Ni@ZIF-8-catalyzed ammonia borane hydrolysis boosted by dramatic volcano-type synergy and plasmonic acceleration

Naixin Kang et al.

Summary: This study reports the efficient performance of AuNi@ZIF-8 alloys as nanocatalysts for H2 evolution from ammonia borane hydrolysis under visible-light illumination. The catalytic activity of AuNi@ZIF-8 alloys under visible light was found to be 3.4 times higher than that of the monometallic Ni catalyst in the dark. This improvement is attributed to the superior support of ZIF-8 in Au0.5Ni0.5@ZIF-8 and the localized surface plasmon resonance induced between 450 and 620 nm. The results also reveal that the activation of water is always the rate-determining step.

Engineering Bimodal Oxygen Vacancies and Pt to Boost the Activity Toward Water Dissociation

Ruofan Shen et al.

Summary: The bimodal oxygen vacancy (V-O) catalysis strategy significantly enhances water dissociation on Pt nanoparticles, leading to the highest catalytic activity among Pt-based materials in ammonia borane hydrolysis. Theoretical simulation and characterization analyses reveal that the bimodal V-O promotes water dissociation in two ways: through an ensemble-inducing effect of Pt and V-O in TiO2, and through an electron promoter effect induced by electron transfer from V-O in NiOx to Pt. This insight establishes a new avenue for designing heterogeneous catalytic materials in the field of energy chemistry.

Enhanced hydrogen generation by reverse spillover effects over bicomponent catalysts

Zhe Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, the promotion functions of the reverse spillover effect in the ammonia borane hydrolysis reaction were proven by constructing a NiO/Al2O3/Pt bicomponent catalyst. In situ XANES results revealed that H species generated at NiO sites spill across the support to the Pt sites reversely, leading to enhanced hydrogen generation rates. The study suggests that understanding the reverse effects can contribute to clarifying catalytic mechanisms and designing efficient catalysts for hydrogen generation reactions.

Summary: Hydrogen, with the highest gravimetric energy density among energy carriers and water as its only oxidation product, is highly attractive for transportation and stationary power applications. However, its low volumetric energy density presents challenges in storage, leading to the development of chemical-based storage methods using various materials. Addressing these challenges requires a deeper understanding of the complex kinetics, mass transport, and microstructural phenomena associated with hydrogen uptake and release. Solutions will require interdisciplinary approaches involving catalysis, data science, nanoscience, interfacial phenomena, and dynamic or phase-change materials.
