Pore Aperture Control Toward Size-Exclusion-Based Hydrocarbon Separations

Bhajan Lal et al.

Summary: We report the synthesis of a zinc-based MOF containing a three-dimensional (3D) linker, which shows high thermal stability for the separation of hexane isomers. The incorporation of the 3D linker enhances the structural stability and provides precise pore apertures/channels. This work represents a significant milestone in the construction of stable Zn-based MOFs and the incorporation of 3D linkers for challenging separations.

Engineering Metal-Organic Frameworks for Selective Separation of Hexane Isomers Using 3-Dimensional Linkers

Courtney S. Smoljan et al.

Summary: Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with precise control over pore size were synthesized by installing a three-dimensional linker in an MOF with one-dimensional channels. The NU-2002 framework showed limited structural breathing compared to MIL-53, as demonstrated by variable-temperature X-ray diffraction studies. Single-component adsorption isotherms showed the efficacy of NU-2002 in separating hexane isomers based on their different sizes and shapes.

Combination of Low-Polar and Polar Binding Sites in Aliphatic MOFs for the Efficient C2H6/C2H4 Separation

Jingyi Zhou et al.

Summary: We reported two isostructural pillared-layer metal-organic frameworks, ZUL-C3 and ZUL-C4, which were constructed by mixed polycycloalkane-type ligands. Their low-polar pore environment and more accessible low-polar C-H binding sites on the pore surface facilitate more van der Waals interactions with C2H6, while the carboxylic groups distributed at four corners of the pores form stronger and more dipolar interactions with C2H6, resulting in a good C2H6/C2H4 uptake ratio and high C2H4 productivity.

Zhen Li et al.

Summary: This study identified a new unsymmetric carborane-based dicarboxylic linker that produced a coordination polymer with higher hydrolytic stability. The polymer obtained from this new linker showed higher catalytic efficiency in model reactions and could be reused multiple times without significant degradation in catalytic activity as compared to a polymer from a more symmetrical carborane-based linker.

Adsorptive molecular sieving of linear over branched alkanes using trianglamine host macrocycles for sustainable separation processes

B. Hua et al.

Summary: This study investigates the use of methylene-bridged trianglamines as supramolecular adsorbents for the selective separation of linear alkane isomers. The selectivity is attributed to the host-guest complexation resulting from the size matching between the trianglamines cavity and the linear guest molecules. Moreover, the supramolecular adsorbents exhibit high recyclability and almost no loss of efficiency, showing great promise for industrial applications.

Separation of Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Porous Materials

Karam B. Idrees et al.

Summary: Industrial-scale thermal separation processes contribute to the increase in carbon dioxide emissions. Porous materials, like metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), can potentially reduce these emissions by achieving nonthermal chemical separations through the physical adsorption of target species. This study focuses on the synthesis of channel-based MOFs NU-2000 and NU-2001, which can separate industrially relevant xylene isomers under ambient conditions due to sub-angstrom size differences. By increasing the linker dimensionality from 2D to 3D, precise control of MOF pore size and aperture can be achieved, independent of linker orientation.

Crystal Flexibility Design through Local and Global Motility Cooperation

Ping Wang et al.

Summary: Incorporating local mobility into a flexible framework through intra-framework pi-pi interactions offers a new approach to flexible porous coordination polymers (PCPs) design. This strategy enables structural transitions and different guest-free structures in PCPs under activation conditions. The flexibility incorporated allows for discrimination of C6 alkane isomers based on gate-opening behaviors, with potential applications in isomer separation for high octane gasoline production.

Advances in adsorptive separation of benzene and cyclohexane by metal-organic framework adsorbents

Soumya Mukherjee et al.

Summary: The chemical industry contributes around 7% of the global GDP, with 40% of its energy consumption coming from separation/purification processes of commodity chemicals. The use of recyclable adsorbents, such as metal-organic framework (MOF) physisorbents, shows promise in reducing this energy footprint, particularly in the separation of C6 cyclic hydrocarbons like benzene and cyclohexane. Despite the potential of MOFs as selective adsorbents, further research is needed to fully explore their capabilities in this niche area.
