Solar light-responsive CdS/UiO-66-NH2 for ultrafast uranium reduction from uranium-containing mine wastewater without external sacrificial agents

Zifan Li et al.

Summary: In this study, CdS/UiO-66-NH2 nanoparticles photocatalysts were successfully prepared and applied for the efficient reduction of uranium hexavalent without sacrificial agents. The results showed that under sunlight irradiation, a significant amount of U(VI) in the mine wastewater can be removed. This work represents an important step towards remediation of radioactive environment from mine wastewater, and promotes the extensive application of photocatalysis technology.

Combined anodic and cathodic hydrogen production from aldehyde oxidation and hydrogen evolution reaction

Tehua Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a hydrogen production system that combines anodic and cathodic H-2 production from low-potential aldehyde oxidation and the hydrogen evolution reaction, respectively, at a low voltage of about 0.1V. Unlike conventional aldehyde electrooxidation, the low-potential aldehyde oxidation enables the hydrogen atom to recombine into H-2 gas. The assembled electrolyser requires only about 0.35 kWh of electricity input per m(3) of H-2, providing a promising avenue for the safe, efficient and scalable production of high-purity hydrogen.

Molecular insight into iron corrosion induced by chloride and sulphate

Zheng Chen et al.

Summary: This study simulated the interactions between chloride or/and sulphate and the Fe (100) surface and found that the interaction of the iron surface with sulphate is stronger than that with chloride, causing more electron loss. In the case of combined chloride-sulphate attack, these two ions compete and weaken the further interactions with the iron surface.

Reduction of U(VI) on Chemically Reduced Montmorillonite and Surface Complexation Modeling of Adsorbed U(IV)

Anshuman Satpathy et al.

Summary: Adsorption and reduction of U(VI) on Fe(II)-bearing clay minerals can control uranium mobility in subsurface environments. The reduction of U(VI) was nearly complete at low sodium concentrations and both pH 3 and 6. At pH 6 and high sodium concentrations, U(VI) reduction was only 70%. Surface-bound U(VI) on unreduced montmorillonite was more easily extracted into solution with bicarbonate than surface-bound U(IV) generated by reduction. A nonelectrostatic surface complexation model was developed to interpret the equilibrium adsorption of U(IV) on Fe(II)-bearing montmorillonite as a function of pH and sodium concentration.

Overcoming the Activity-Stability Trade-Off in Heterogeneous Electro-Fenton Catalysis: Encapsulating Carbon Cloth-Supported Iron Oxychloride within Graphitic Layers

Lele Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, a encapsulation engineering strategy is proposed to improve the stability of composite cathodes without causing activity loss. By tightly covering the surface of traditional cathodes with an ultrathin carbon layer, the composite cathodes achieved high stability and maintained almost unaffected activity. Experimental and theoretical analysis revealed the underlying mechanism of electron penetration-triggered activation.
