Olefin-Surface Interactions: A Key Activity Parameter in Silica-Supported Olefin Metathesis Catalysts

Zachariah J. Berkson et al.

Summary: This study compares the reactivity of different types of Mo-based metathesis catalysts for the metathesis of long-chain alpha-olefins at low temperatures. It is found that catalysts based on supported Mo oxo species exhibit strong activity dependence on the alpha-olefin chain length, while molecular and supported Mo alkylidenes do not show such dependence. Furthermore, the decrease in activity is attributed to the strong adsorption of internal olefin metathesis products on supported Mo oxo catalysts. This study highlights the importance of support and active site composition in catalytic activity and emphasizes the need to consider adsorption in catalyst design.

Boosting the Metathesis Activity of Molybdenum Oxo Alkylidenes by Tuning the Anionic Ligand σ Donation

Jordan De Jesus Silva et al.

Summary: In this study, the catalytic performances of molybdenum oxo alkylidene species with different anionic O ligands were evaluated in metathesis reactions of internal and terminal olefins. It was found that the presence of the ORF9 ligand significantly increased catalytic activity, particularly in the molecular form. In contrast, molecular complexes with large aryloxy anionic ligands showed little activity, while their silica-supported counterparts exhibited improved activity.

Olefin oligomerization by main group Ga3+ and Zn2+ single site catalysts on SiO2

Nicole J. LiBretto et al.

Summary: In this study, it was found that silica-supported, single-site catalysts containing immobilized main group Zn2+ and Ga3+ ion sites can catalyze the oligomerization of ethylene and propylene to produce linear olefins, with rates similar to Ni2+ and higher molecular weight olefins for Ga3+. The oligomerization was suggested to occur via metal hydride and metal alkyl intermediates formed during olefin insertion and beta-hydride elimination elementary steps, with initiation proposed to occur through heterolytic C-H dissociation of ethylene at around 250 degrees C. This study illuminates new chemistry for main group metal catalysts with potential for developing new oligomerization processes.
