Quaternary Ammonium-Functionalized Polyethylene-Based Anion Exchange Membranes: Balancing Performance and Stability

Cheyenne R. Peltier et al.

Summary: This study measured the conductivities of 17 quaternary ammonium-functionalized polyethylene-based anion exchange membranes (AEMs) and found that a piperidinium-based AEM with a beta-methyl in the backbone exhibited a high hydroxide ion conductivity of 41 mS/cm at 22 degrees C and excellent stability with 95% conductivity retention after 30 days in 1 M KOH at 80 degrees C. Increasing the ion exchange capacity of the piperidinium-based AEM also improved its performance in fuel cell tests, reaching a peak power density of 1.0 W/cm2, comparable to other state-of-the-art AEMs after optimization.

Anion exchange polyelectrolytes for membranes and ionomers

Nanjun Chen et al.

Summary: Anion exchange membrane fuel cells (AEMFCs) are considered a low-cost alternative to proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) for clean energy conversion, as they utilize non-platinum group metals as electrocatalysts under alkaline conditions. The development of high-performance anion-exchange polyelectrolytes (AEPs) has led to significant progress in power density and durability of AEMFCs, making them comparable to or even better than PEMFCs.

Multiblock Copolymer Anion-Exchange Membranes Derived from Vinyl Addition Polynorbornenes

Ryan Selhorst et al.

Summary: Block copolymers have shown promise in ion-exchange membranes due to their ability to phase separate into well-defined nanostructures, promoting transport. Conductivity of multiblock copolymers was higher than statistical copolymers, likely due to increased surface-to-volume ratio improving connectedness of ionic domains. Water uptake of copolymers depended on the number and order of blocks.
