On the Edge of the Known: Extremely Electron-Rich (Di)Carboranyl Phosphines

Jan Schulz et al.

Summary: The synthesis of B9-Phos ligands with two carboranyl moieties and bulky electron-donating substituents, previously deemed unattainable, is reported. The electrochemical properties of B9-Phos ligands were investigated, showing the ability of mesityl derivatives to form stabilized phosphoniumyl radical cations. The B9-Phos ligands possess a highly electron-releasing character surpassing that of alkyl phosphines and commonly used N-heterocyclic carbenes.

Junyi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, iminoboryl o-carboranes were successfully synthesized and it was found that borirane 2a isomerizes more readily. Kinetics study revealed a bimolecular mechanism between borirane and THF, which is in good agreement with the computationally proposed reaction pathway.

Accessing Boron-Doped Pentaphene Analogues from 12-Boradibenzofluorene

Manjur O. Akram et al.

Summary: Borole-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) have been synthesized and studied in this work. Intermolecular nitrene and oxygen atom insertion reactions were used to access 1,2-azaborine- and 1,2-oxaborine-containing analogues. Iodosobenzene was established as a versatile reagent for oxygen atom insertion reactions into various borole species to access 1,2-oxaborine systems.

Tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane: An Isolable, Halogen-Free, Lewis Superacid

Manjur O. Akram et al.

Summary: The synthesis of a single site neutral Lewis superacid, tris(ortho-carboranyl)borane (BoCb(3)), was achieved in one pot from commercially available materials. It was confirmed to be a Lewis superacid due to its high fluoride ion affinity (FIA), and exhibited stronger Lewis acidity compared to widely used fluorinated aryl boranes, as evidenced by the Gutmann-Beckett method and adducts with Lewis bases. The unusually high Lewis acidity can be rationalized by the electron-withdrawing effect of ortho-carborane and lack of pi-delocalization of the LUMO. Catalytic studies demonstrated that BoCb(3) is a superior catalyst for promoting C-F bond functionalization reactions compared to tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane [B(C6F5)(3)].

Applications of catalysis in hydroboration of imines, nitriles, and carbodiimides

Adineh Rezaei Bazkiaei et al.

Summary: The catalytic hydroboration of imines, nitriles, and carbodiimides is an important method for synthesizing key intermediates in the production of valuable products. The use of precious metals and harsh reaction conditions in initial studies has been replaced by the use of base metals, main group elements, and milder reaction conditions in recent advancements. This review categorizes the metal and nonmetal catalyzed hydroboration of these unsaturated organic molecules into precious metals, base metals, and main group catalysts, and provides a summary of the TON and TOF of imine hydroboration catalysts, as well as recent progress in the field.
