High-Performance n-Type Organic Electrochemical Transistors Enabled by Aqueous Solution Processing of Amphiphilicity-Driven Polymer Assembly

Dahyun Jeong et al.

Summary: Despite the limited number of high-performance n-type materials, this study develops a series of naphthalene diimide-based polymers with asymmetrically branched oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains for green-solvent-processed, high-performance n-type organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The incorporation of branched OEG side chains enables solubility in eco-friendly ethanol/water solvent mixtures and produces highly ordered polymer packing with excellent lateral charge transport. The resulting n-type OECT exhibits the best electrical/electrochemical performance in the family, indicating important guidelines for the design of n-type organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors with excellent OECT characteristics.

Summary: Organic mixed conductors have attracted significant interest for bioelectronic applications. This study demonstrates the design and characterization of polymeric mixed conductors with different properties by using three different building blocks. Experimental and computational techniques are employed to investigate the electrochemical, structural, and mixed ionic and electronic properties of these polymers, allowing the derivation of important structure-property relations. The findings provide molecular-design strategies for efficient transistor operation in an aqueous environment.

Hybrid 3D/Inkjet-Printed Organic Neuromorphic Transistors

Tanyaradzwa N. Mangoma et al.

Summary: Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are essential in bioelectronics and printed electronics applications due to their simple structure, ease of tunability, biocompatibility, and suitability for different fabrication routes. This study presents a hybrid direct-write additive manufacturing approach to fabricating OECTs, combining 3D printing of conducting and insulating layers with inkjet printing of semiconducting thin films. The results demonstrate that this manufacturing method can rapidly produce OECTs and neuromorphic devices with good performance.

Strain-Engineering Induced Anisotropic Crystallite Orientation and Maximized Carrier Mobility for High-Performance Microfiber-Based Organic Bioelectronic Devices

Youngseok Kim et al.

Summary: This study reports high-performance microfiber-based organic electrochemical transistors with unprecedentedly large muC*, achieved by using highly ordered crystalline PEDOT:PSS microfibers with very high carrier mobilities. The strain engineering and solvent-mediated crystallization techniques led to the permanent preferential alignment of crystalline PEDOT:PSS domains, resulting in high carrier mobility without compromising volumetric capacitance and hole density. The advantageous electrical and electrochemical characteristics offer a benchmark parameter of mu C* over approximately 1500 F cm(-1) V-1 s(-1), which is the highest metric reported in the literature and can be beneficial for realizing a new class of substrate-free bioelectronics.

Influence of Backbone Curvature on the Organic Electrochemical Transistor Performance of Glycolated Donor-Acceptor Conjugated Polymers

Bowen Ding et al.

Summary: Two new glycolated semiconducting polymers, PgBT(F)2gT and PgBT(F)2gTT, with different backbone curvatures were designed and synthesised for application in p-type accumulation mode organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). While PgBT(F)2gT achieved a higher volumetric capacitance due to its curved backbone geometry, PgBT(F)2gTT exhibited superior OECT performance overall thanks to its enhanced order, resulting in faster charge mobility.

Understanding of Face-On Crystallites Transitioning to Edge-On Crystallites in Thiophene-Based Conjugated Polymers

Sung Yun Son et al.

Summary: The orientation of crystallites in semicrystalline conjugated polymer thin films significantly impacts charge transport properties. In this study, a random copolymer RP-3T demonstrated a transition from predominantly face-on to edge-on orientation during annealing. Through detailed analysis, it was found that face-on crystallites disappear at a lower temperature while edge-on crystallites continue to grow, providing insight into the transition process.

Engineering donor-acceptor conjugated polymers for high-performance and fast-response organic electrochemical transistors†

Hanyu Jia et al.

Summary: High-performance organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) using donor-acceptor (D-A) conjugated polymers show promising potential, but their performance lags behind polythiophene systems. By engineering the backbone and side chain of a series of diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based D-A polymers, researchers achieved improved performance with high figure-of-merit and fast response time. This work highlights the complexity and systematic approach required for developing high-performance OECTs based on D-A polymers.
