Crystal Facet-Manipulated 2D Pt Nanodendrites to Achieve an Intimate Heterointerface for Hydrogen Evolution Reactions

Yu-Rim Hong et al.

Summary: This study addresses the inefficient interfacial contact effect in Pt-catalyzed alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) by producing atomically flat two-dimensional Pt nanodendrites (2D-PtNDs) and realizing a maximized and firmly bound lateral heterointerface with NiFe-layered double hydroxide (LDH). This work demonstrates the importance of shape and facet of Pt in creating heterointerfaces that provide catalytic synergy for efficient hydrogen production.

Platinum single-atom catalyst with self-adjustable valence state for large-current-density acidic water oxidation

Hui Su et al.

Summary: By modulating the electronic structure of Pt, a Pt-based catalyst with high OER activity under acidic conditions and large current density was developed. In situ experiments showed the production of a key (*O)-Pt-1-C2N2 intermediate, favoring the dissociation of H2O and preventing over-oxidation of active sites.

Mastering the surface strain of platinum catalysts for efficient electrocatalysis

Tianou He et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that by depositing ultrathin Pt shells on palladium-based nanocubes, strain in the Pt(100) lattice can be induced and adjusted, leading to tunable electrocatalytic activity for specific reactions. By controlling the lattice strain, the researchers were able to optimize the performance of Pt catalysts for a wide range of reactions, showing different strain-activity correlations for different reactions.

Is There Anything Better than Pt for HER?

Johannes Novak Hansen et al.

Summary: Efforts to find cheap alternatives to platinum for the hydrogen evolution reaction have not yet found a catalyst with intrinsic activity that can compete with platinum. It is important to measure intrinsic catalytic activities and consider the impact of mass-transport limitations on observed activity. Despite achieving the highest turnover frequency for platinum, the true intrinsic HER activity for platinum in acid remains unknown due to mass transport limitations.
