The Covid-19 outbreak is a major public health problem that has caused a global pandemic due to its rapid transmission. Early and efficient identification of the virus is crucial for the appropriate treatment and prevention of severe disease. Developing and utilizing sensitive, specific, rapid, and low-cost diagnostic methods is a global priority in controlling the pandemic. This mini-review discusses the emergence and worldwide impact of SARS-CoV-2, the main diagnostic techniques, and the development of electrochemical biosensors for SARS-CoV-2 detection, which show promise as tools for disease detection.
The Covid-19 outbreak constituted a major public health problem and its rapid transmission provoked a global pandemic. Early and efficient identification of the virus in infected patients is essential to apply the appropriate treatment and prevent the evolution to the severe state of the disease. Developing and using sensitive, specific, rapid, and low-cost methods is a priority within global strategies to control the pandemic. Here is presented a mini-review that includes the emergence and worldwide impact of the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), the main techniques used for its diagnosis, and developed electrochemical biosensors for SARS-CoV-2 determination, which are promising tools for the detection of this disease.
