A Novel Electrochemiluminescence Janus Emitter for Dual-Mode Biosensing

Tingting Han et al.

Summary: A novel electrochemiluminescence (ECL) Janus emitter combining ruthenium (II) complex and luminol polymer doped hemispheres enables dual-mode biosensing for multiple disease-related biomarkers from cells. It eliminates interference between different ECL mono-luminophores, improving ECL efficiency and detection sensitivity. It also enables ratiometric ECL sensing of H2O2 and simultaneous identification and quantification of cancer-related dual microRNAs.

Revisiting the Oxidizing Capacity of the Periodate-H2O2 Mixture: Identification of the Primary Oxidants and Their Formation Mechanisms

Yelim Kim et al.

Summary: This study reexamined the mechanisms of oxidative organic degradation by the binary mixture of periodate and H2O2 (PI/H2O2). The findings showed that PI/H2O2 predominantly decomposes organics by ·OH at pH < 5, contradicting previous claims. The study also revealed a potential switch in the major oxidant under varying pH conditions.

Identifying Luminol Electrochemiluminescence at the Cathode via Single-Atom Catalysts Tuned Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Hongyin Xia et al.

Summary: In this study, the relationship between intrinsic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity and electrochemiluminescence (ECL) behavior was explored using single-atom catalysts (SACs). By combining electrochemical ORR catalyzed via SACs and chemical oxidation of luminol, the traditionally neglected cathodic ECL emission of luminol was significantly enhanced. This work is important for guiding the development of an amplified sensing platform through rational tailoring of the ORR activity of SACs and potential-resolved ECL assays based on high-efficiency cathodic ECL.

Paper-based immunosensor with NH2-MIL-53(Fe) as stable and multifunctional signal label for dual-mode detection of prostate specific antigen

Yue Hou et al.

Summary: A versatile paper-based immunosensor with dual fluorescence and chemiluminescence detection strategy was developed for sensitive detection of prostate specific antigen (PSA). Through conjugation of NH2-MIL-53(Fe) with detection antibodies, this sensor achieved dual-mode detection of PSA with high sensitivity and accuracy in one detection area. This simple and cost-effective strategy can promote the development and application of MOFs in paper-based immunoassay.

Physical Strategy to Determine Absolute Electrochemiluminescence Quantum Efficiencies of Coreactant Systems Using a Photon-Counting Photomultiplier Device

Kenneth Chu et al.

Summary: In this study, an absolute method using a photon-counting device was developed to determine the electrochemiluminescence quantum efficiency of coreactant systems. The efficiency of the Ru(bpy)(3)(2+)/ tri-n-propylamine (TPrA) ECL coreactant system was found to be 10.0 +/- 1.1%, showing a 3-fold enhancement compared to annihilation pathways. These findings suggest a promising approach in the expanding field of ECL research.

Spatially Selective Imaging of Cell-Matrix and Cell-Cell Junctions by Electrochemiluminescence

Hao Ding et al.

Summary: A novel method for spatially selective imaging of cell junctions by regulating the thickness of the electrochemiluminescence (ECL) layer through control of luminophore and co-reactant concentrations has been reported. Low luminophore concentration reveals cell-matrix adhesions, while high concentration allows sequential imaging of cell-matrix and cell-cell junctions. This strategy not only provides new insights into ECL mechanisms but also expands the potential applications of ECL microscopy in bioimaging.
