Stereoselective toxicity mechanism of neonicotinoid dinotefuran in honeybees: New perspective from a spatial metabolomics study

Yue Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, an integrated mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) and untargeted metabolomics method was used to investigate the metabolic regulation of honeybees in response to stereoisomeric dinotefuran pesticides. The results indicated that S-(+)-dinotefuran had higher toxicity than R-(-)-dinotefuran, affecting multiple metabolic pathways and energy metabolism in honeybees. The findings provide new perspectives for the development and applications of pure chiral agrochemicals.

Physical processes behind interactions of microplastic particles with natural ice

Irina Chubarenko

Summary: Research shows that the distribution of microplastic particles in sea ice is influenced by various factors, including the differences in thermal properties between plastic particles and ice, environmental temperature, and the structure of the ice. During freeze/thaw cycles, the plastic particles tend to concentrate on the ice surface. During sea ice growth and aging, the plastic particles are repelled from water and ice and accumulate in air bubbles, brine channels, and the upper/lower boundaries of the ice column. Sea ice permeability can redistribute the sub-millimeter microplastic particles, potentially introducing variability in contamination over time.

A new update of MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry in lipid research

Kathrin M. Engel et al.

Summary: Matrix-assisted laser desorption and ionization (MALDI) mass spectrometry (MS) is a valuable tool in lipid research due to its speed, sensitivity, and ability to tolerate impurities. This article discusses the methodology, ion-forming processes, and characteristics of different lipid classes in MALDI MS, with a focus on glycerophospholipids. The article also highlights the progress made in the last decade, particularly in the quantitative aspects of MALDI MS. The careful choice of matrix and the combination of MALDI MS with thin-layer chromatography (TLC) are emphasized as important factors for successful lipid detection.

Effects of polystyrene microplastics acute exposure in the liver of swordtail fish (Xiphophorus helleri) revealed by LC-MS metabolomics

Yan-Kun Zhang et al.

Summary: The acute exposure of swordtail fish to microplastics was found to have adverse effects on their liver, leading to changes in metabolic profiles involving multiple metabolic pathways and metabolites. Microplastics affected oxidative stress, immune function, energy metabolism, sugar metabolism, lipid metabolism, and other physiological processes, as well as feed utilization, growth performance, nutrient metabolism, and animal growth. Additionally, a dose-effect relationship was observed between the quantity of microplastics and the number of affected amino acids.

Metabolic-Dysregulation-Based iEESI-MS Reveals Potential Biomarkers Associated with Early-Stage and Progressive Colorectal Cancer

Ran Zheng et al.

Summary: The application of rapid and accurate diagnostic methods can significantly improve the survival rates of colorectal cancer. In this study, a non-targeted metabolomic approach based on iEESI-MS was used to identify metabolite ions associated with the progression of colorectal cancer. A support vector machine model was built using 10 differential metabolite ions to distinguish early-stage colorectal cancer from normal tissues, with a high prediction accuracy of 92.6%. The biomarker panel, specifically lysophosphatidylcholine (LPC) (18:0), showed good diagnostic potential in differentiating early-stage colorectal cancer from advanced-stage colorectal cancer.

Degradation of Microplastics by a Thermal Fenton Reaction

Kunsheng Hu et al.

Summary: Microplastics are widely present in the environment and contaminate the food chain, posing potential risks to living beings. Current methods for removing microplastics from water are inefficient. In this study, a hydrothermal coupled Fenton system is developed, which can efficiently remove microplastics and maintain high efficiency in practical water bodies. This study provides a new approach for microplastic purification and insights into microplastic degradation.
