Metabolomics and mass spectrometry imaging reveal the chronic toxicity of indoxacarb to adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) livers

Lianlian Ma et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the chronic exposure toxicity of the insecticide indoxacarb on adult zebrafish liver using metabolomics and mass spectrometry imaging (MSI) methods. The results showed that indoxacarb exposure affected the movement behaviors of zebrafish and increased the activities of certain enzymes in the liver. Pathological analysis revealed cavitation and pathological reactions in the liver. Metabolomics and MSI results indicated that indoxacarb significantly affected metabolic pathways in the zebrafish liver. These findings highlight the disturbance of metabolic pathways as the mechanism behind the toxicity of indoxacarb.

Molecular Pathological Diagnosis of Thyroid Tumors Using Spatially Resolved Metabolomics

Luojiao Huang et al.

Summary: A spatially resolved metabolomics analysis technique called air flow-assisted desorption electrospray ionization mass spectrometry imaging (AFADESI-MSI) was used to establish a molecular diagnostic strategy for differentiating four pathological types of thyroid tumor. It visualizes the metabolic heterogeneity in line with the cellular heterogeneity in the tumor tissue, allowing for the visualization and discrimination of benign and malignant follicular thyroid tumors. The diagnostic model based on metabolic profiles showed promising accuracy in predicting tumor foci.

An Organ-Specific Metabolite Annotation Approach for Ambient Mass Spectrometry Imaging Reveals Spatial Metabolic Alterations of a Whole Mouse Body

Ying Zhu et al.

Summary: This study proposes an organ-specific, metabolite-database-driven approach for metabolite annotation in mass spectrometry imaging (MSI). By combining liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry, 1620 metabolites were identified from multiple mouse organs and serum. This method enables accurate annotation and visualization of metabolites on a body-wide level and reveals spatial metabolic alterations across different organs.

Three-Dimensional Imaging of Whole-Body Zebrafish Revealed Lipid Disorders Associated with Niemann-Pick Disease Type C1

Xiaoping Liang et al.

Summary: A three-dimensional matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry imaging (3D MALDI-MSI) approach was developed for the first time to analyze whole-body zebrafish and identify altered lipids in a zebrafish model of Niemann-Pick disease type Cl (NPC1). The 3D fish model provided comprehensive information on the distribution of lipids in various organs, revealing significant alterations in sphingolipids and phospholipids in NPC1 mutant fish compared to wild type. This whole-body 3D MALDI-MSI approach unveiled unique lipid signatures for different NPC1-affected organs, offering insights into the link between impaired lipid storage and clinical symptoms.
