Can the 5-item Modified Frailty Index Predict Outcomes in Geriatric Trauma? A National Database Study

Summary: This study investigated the association between frailty index and outcomes in geriatric trauma patients. The results showed that moderate and severe frailty were significant predictors of complications, while only severe frailty was associated with short-term mortality. This suggests that the frailty index can be used as an objective measure to assess the risk of geriatric trauma.

The most commonly used frailty instrument is the modified frailty index (mFI), although a variety of instruments are employed. Frailty is consistently associated with adverse outcomes, but further research is needed to establish standardized methods for assessing frailty and its impact on surgical outcomes.
