Modeling the impact of COVID-19 pandemic-driven increases in alcohol consumption on health outcomes and hospitalization costs in the United States

Carolina Barbosa et al.

Summary: The increase in alcohol consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States may lead to significant health and cost impacts. Short-term increases in drinking result in a loss of life years, quality-adjusted life years, and an increase in alcohol-related hospitalizations and costs. Older individuals, women, and non-Hispanic black individuals are more affected. If the increased drinking levels persist, the impacts will be even greater in the long term.

Psychological Distress and Heavy Alcohol Consumption Among US Young Women During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Hyeouk Chris Hahm et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between COVID-19 psychological distress and heavy alcohol use among young adult women in the U.S. The findings indicate that high levels of COVID-19-related grief increase the risk of heavy drinking, while high levels of COVID-19-related worry decrease the likelihood of heavy drinking. Therefore, interventions and clinical interventions should target those who experience deeper COVID-19-related grief, and further research is needed to assess the long-term impacts of the pandemic on heavy drinking among young women.

Increased alcohol use during the COVID-19 pandemic: The effect of mental health and age in a cross-sectional sample of social media users in the US

Ariadna Capasso et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to increased alcohol use, especially among individuals with anxiety and depression. This study found that age may influence the association between anxiety, depression symptoms, and alcohol use during the pandemic. Younger individuals (18-39 years old) had the highest probability of reporting increased alcohol use, while older individuals with anxiety and depression symptoms were more likely to increase their drinking compared to those without symptoms. These findings suggest the need for targeted public health messaging and expanded substance use services for middle-aged and older adults with mental health symptoms.
