Loading mechanisms of the anterior cruciate ligament

The combination of muscular resistance, external reaction forces, internal tibial torque, and knee abduction moment during specific athletic maneuvers leads to the greatest ACL loads. The primary mechanism for ACL loading is the anterior tibial shear force, but there is controversy regarding the importance of transverse-plane and frontal-plane loading in ACL injury scenarios. Additionally, large knee compression forces, sloped tibial plateau, and microdamage accumulation in the ligament contribute to ACL failure.
