High prevalence of hip lesions secondary to arthroscopic over- or undercorrection of femoroacetabular impingement in patients with postoperative pain

Malin K. Meier et al.

Summary: This study found a high prevalence of osseous deformities and intra-articular lesions in patients following arthroscopic FAI correction, with a higher proportion of patients experiencing acetabular cartilage lesions. Moreover, extensive preoperative cartilage damage and an increase in postoperative alpha angles were identified as risk factors for progressive cartilage damage.

Automated quantification of cartilage quality for hip treatment decision support

Adrian C. Ruckli et al.

Summary: A 3D analysis application for hip cartilage was developed for the automated detection of subtle morphological and biochemical signs of cartilage degradation using MRI sequences. The application achieved accurate parametrization and increased processing speed without loss of segmentation accuracy.

Best Practices: Hip Femoroacetabular Impingement

Florian Schmaranzer et al.

Summary: Imaging is crucial in evaluating patients with femoroacetabular impingement (FAI). Pelvic radiography is essential for diagnosing FAI, while MRI is recommended for assessing chondrolabral lesions. Advanced imaging techniques such as 3D simulation and MR arthrography have the potential to improve surgical decision-making, but further research is needed to assess their clinical value.

Summary: This study compared the performance of 3D MP2RAGE MRI with 3D DFA techniques in hip cartilage T1 mapping, showing that MP2RAGE MRI provides more accurate T1 mapping with less susceptibility to B-1 inhomogeneities.

Arthroscopic Correction of Sports-Related Femoroacetabular Impingement in Competitive Athletes 2-Year Clinical Outcome and Predictors for Achieving Minimal Clinically Important Difference

Karen Mullins et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of arthroscopic surgery in young, active athletes with FAI, showing that most athletes demonstrated significant improvements at 2-year follow-up, with 84% continuing to participate in sports. Higher preoperative PROM scores reduced the likelihood of achieving MCID, while returning to play was the strongest predictor of reaching MCID in this athletic cohort.

Biochemical MRI With dGEMRIC Corresponds to 3D-CT Based Impingement Location for Detection of Acetabular Cartilage Damage in FAI Patients

Till D. Lerch et al.

Summary: This study found that MRI with dGEMRIC was more sensitive in detecting cartilage damage compared to morphological MRI, which could aid in patient-specific diagnosis of FAI and preoperative patient selection.

Multi-centre randomised controlled trial comparing arthroscopic hip surgery to physiotherapist-led care for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome on hip cartilage metabolism: the Australian FASHIoN trial

David J. Hunter et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the outcomes of hip arthroscopy and physiotherapist-led management for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome. The results showed that there was no significant difference in delayed gadolinium-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (dGEMRIC) scores and hip-related quality of life between the two groups at 12 months follow-up. Patients who underwent surgery reported better symptom improvement at 12 months, but this improvement was not attributed to better hip cartilage metabolism.
