Weight stigma, policy initiatives, and harnessing social media to elevate activism

Summary: Efforts to promote positive body image and body acceptance face challenges due to societal stigma against high body weight or large body size. Despite evidence of weight stigma and discrimination, policies to address this injustice are lacking. More activism is needed to reduce societal weight stigma, and social media could be a powerful platform for public awareness and policy change to eliminate weight stigma.

Anti-fat attitudes among Spanish general population: Psychometric properties of the anti-fat attitudes scale

Summary: Weight discrimination is a deeply rooted form of prejudice in society. This study aimed to adapt the Anti-Fat Attitudes scale (AFA) for the Spanish general population. The findings revealed that men had more negative attitudes towards obesity and believed it was under someone's control, while women expressed more fear of gaining weight. Normal-weight individuals were found to discriminate more, and those with overweight or obesity had a greater fear of weight gain. The Spanish version of the AFA is considered a suitable tool for evaluating negative attitudes towards obesity in clinical and research settings.

International comparisons of weight stigma: addressing a void in the field

Summary: The study found that weight stigma is prevalent for adults actively engaged in weight management across different Western countries, with experiences mainly concentrated in childhood and adolescence and coming from family members, classmates, doctors, co-workers, and friends. Participants in Germany reported a higher frequency of weight stigma throughout their whole life, but experienced less distress associated with the stigmatizing experiences.

It was found that the public primarily expressed weight bias through fear of weight gain and the belief in controllability of weight through willpower.
