High-Resolution MRI for Evaluation of the Possibility of Successful Recanalization in Symptomatic Chronic ICA Occlusion: A Retrospective Study

M. Tang et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the high-resolution MR imaging characteristics of symptomatic chronic ICA occlusion and their association with successful recanalization. The study found that lesion length and calcification volume (for proximal occlusion), as well as the level of reversed distal ICA flow and the lumen area (for distal occlusion), are predictors of successful recanalization. High-resolution MR imaging can evaluate chronic ICA occlusion and aid in clinical decision-making.

High-resolution magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging-guided endovascular recanalization for nonacute intracranial artery occlusion

Zhikai Hou et al.

Summary: Based on the occluded segment characteristics on high-resolution magnetic resonance vessel wall imaging (MR-VWI), the study evaluated the role of high-resolution MR-VWI-guided endovascular recanalization for patients with symptomatic nonacute intracranial artery occlusion (ICAO). The results showed that occlusion with residual lumen and shorter occlusion length were associated with successful recanalization.

Carotid endarterectomy with concomitant distal endovascular intervention is associated with increased rates of stroke and death

Luke M. Stewart et al.

Summary: The study found that preoperative risk factors associated with the need for CEA+D include previous peripheral vascular intervention, American Society of Anesthesiologists class >= 4, contralateral ICA occlusion, low-volume surgeon, and previous ipsilateral CEA. CEA+D was associated with significantly increased rates of stroke in both asymptomatic and symptomatic patients, as well as decreased rates of 30-day survival.

Chronic total occlusion and spontaneous recanalization of the internal carotid artery: Natural history and management strategy

Alex Lall et al.

Summary: Spontaneous recanalization of chronic total occlusion of the internal carotid artery is a rare occurrence. Etiologies include atherosclerosis, cardioembolism, and dissection. Symptoms of recanalization can range from hypoperfusion to embolic stroke. Management should be tailored based on symptoms, etiology, imaging findings, surgical risk, and follow-up reliability.

Imaging Predictors for Endovascular Recanalization of Non-acute Occlusion of Internal Carotid Artery Based on 3D T1-SPACE MRI and DSA

Liu Chao et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively analyzed consecutive cases of internal carotid artery occlusion with ipsilateral ischemic stroke refractory to therapy between February 2017 and August 2020. The results showed that factors such as early ischemic event, tapered stump, reversed flow of the ophthalmic artery, high intraluminal signal, and no vessel wall collapse were associated with successful recanalization.

Surgical therapy for chronic internal carotid artery occlusion: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Genmao Cao et al.

Summary: This systematic review evaluated the current evidence regarding revascularization for Chronic Internal Carotid Artery Occlusion (CICAO). Bypass surgery had high graft patency but did not show benefit on neurological function, recurrent stroke, or deaths; endovascular therapy showed significant improvement in neurological function and a nonsignificant reduction in cerebrovascular events and deaths; hybrid surgery was considered a potential treatment for CICAO due to its high technical success rate and significant neurological improvement.

Summary: This study reviewed clinical studies on endovascular treatment for chronic total occlusion of the internal carotid artery, showing that the treatment is safe and feasible with a technical success rate of 67%, and a low rate of neurological complications in both early and late stages.
