Exploring the Relationships Between Autozygosity, Educational Attainment, and Cognitive Ability in a Contemporary, Trans-Ancestral American Sample

Sarah M. C. Colbert et al.

Summary: Previous studies have found associations between autozygosity and traits such as educational attainment and cognitive ability. This study examined a contemporary sample of adolescents and found a negative association between autozygosity and child cognitive ability. The associations between autozygosity and parental educational attainment were in the expected direction but weaker than in previous research. The study also found a lower level of autozygosity in this sample compared to previous studies, suggesting a overall decrease over generations.

Genomic partitioning of inbreeding depression in humans

Loic Yengo et al.

Summary: The study found significant enrichment of inbreeding depression (ID) in genomic regions with high recombination rates, conserved function across species, and regulatory elements. Additionally, regions associated with traits showed enrichment of ID signal. The functional enrichment of SNP-based heritability was strongly correlated with that of ID, indicating that ID is likely due to partially recessive deleterious alleles in low linkage disequilibrium regions of the genome.

Human inbreeding has decreased in time through the Holocene

Francisco C. Ceballos et al.

Summary: The frequency of inbreeding, as measured by runs of homozygosity, has decreased over time in ancient Eurasian genomes. The strongest effect is associated with the Neolithic transition, indicating a population size effect on inbreeding prevalence. Cases of high consanguinity were rare, suggesting that such practices may have become widespread within the last few millennia.

Parental relatedness through time revealed by runs of homozygosity in ancient DNA

Harald Ringbauer et al.

Summary: The study reveals low rates of close kin unions in most ancient populations through analysis of ancient DNA data, as well as a marked decay in background parental relatedness coinciding with or shortly after the advent of sedentary agriculture. This signal, likely linked to increasing local population sizes, is observed across several geographic transects worldwide.
