Keep it Simple, Laboratory Parameters to Predict Complicated Acute Appendicitis in Children Younger Than Five Years

Danny Hazan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the role of routine blood tests in differentiating between complicated and uncomplicated acute appendicitis. The retrospective analysis showed that C-reactive protein, neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio, and platelet/lymphocyte ratio could be used as simple laboratory parameters to identify complicated appendicitis in children aged 5 years or younger. These universal parameters may guide the treatment and surgical decision-making for a difficult-to-diagnose population.

Normal inflammatory markers and acute appendicitis: a national multicentre prospective cohort analysis

J. de Jonge et al.

Summary: In patients with confirmed acute appendicitis, approximately 2 out of 100 patients have both normal white blood cell count and C-reactive protein levels, with very rare cases found in patients with complicated appendicitis. This suggests that normal inflammatory markers can sometimes be present in acute appendicitis cases.

Diagnosis of Uncomplicated and Complicated Appendicitis in Adults

W. J. Bom et al.

Summary: The diagnostic work-up of acute appendicitis remains challenging, with a recommendation for standard imaging in all patients suspected of having the condition. Differentiation between uncomplicated and complicated cases is crucial, with imaging being essential for accurate diagnosis. Incorporating imaging features into clinical scoring models may enhance differentiation and optimize treatment outcomes for non-operative management.

Utility of biomarkers in predicting complicated appendicitis: can immature granulocyte percentage and C-reactive protein be used?

Ali Gungor et al.

Summary: In predicting complicated appendicitis, immature granulocyte percentage and C-reactive protein levels were found to be the most valuable biomarkers with higher sensitivity. Bilirubin levels and neutrophil to lymphocyte ratios were not useful for predicting CA.

The Dynamics of Inflammatory Markers in Patients with Suspected Acute Appendicitis

Azuolas Algimantas Kaminskas et al.

Summary: This study analyzed data from 453 patients with suspected acute appendicitis and found that increasing concentrations of inflammatory markers are more characteristic in complicated AA patients within the first 48 hours of disease onset. A combination of laboratory tests with clinical signs and symptoms has mediocre diagnostic accuracy in suspecting AA.
