A modular systematic review of antenatal interventions targeting modifiable environmental exposures in improving low birth weight

Pieta K. Nasanen-Gilmore et al.

Summary: The progress of antenatal interventions to improve birth outcomes, including reducing environmental exposures and improving health-seeking behaviors, has been slow. Limited evidence suggests that interventions to reduce indoor air pollution and prevent parasitic infections may have no significant effect on reducing low birth weight and preterm birth. Further research on broader interventions is needed.

Antenatal interventions to address harmful behaviors and psychosocial risk factors in the prevention of low birth weight

Annariina M. Koivu et al.

Summary: This systematic review examines the effect of eleven antenatal interventions on adverse birth outcomes. The study finds that psychosocial interventions for reducing smoking in pregnancy may reduce the risk of low birth weight, and professionally provided psychosocial support may reduce the risk of preterm birth. However, financial incentives, nicotine replacement therapy, and virtually delivered psychosocial support do not appear to reduce the risk of adverse birth outcomes.

Antenatal interventions to reduce risk of low birth weight related to maternal infections during pregnancy

Yvonne Muthiani et al.

Summary: This article aims to summarize the evidence from published literature on the effect of key interventions targeting maternal infections on adverse birth outcomes. The results suggest that administering 3 or more doses of intermittent preventive treatment can reduce the risk of low birth weight. Providing insecticide-treated bed nets, periodontal treatment, and screening and treatment of asymptomatic bacteriuria may also reduce the risk of low birth weight. However, there is limited evidence for other interventions in reducing adverse birth outcomes.

Association between omega-3 fatty acid supplementation and lower risk of preterm delivery: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Lu Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that omega-3 fatty acid supplementation during pregnancy is not significantly associated with a reduced risk of preterm delivery compared to placebo or no treatment. However, subgroup analysis showed that a mix of DHA and EPA supplementation and a dosage greater than 1g can significantly reduce the rate of preterm birth.

The effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids supplementation in pregnancy, lactation, and infancy: An umbrella review of meta-analyses of randomized trials

Fatemeh Dehghani Firouzabadi et al.

Summary: This umbrella review evaluated the effects of long-chain omega-3 fatty acid supplementation in pregnancy, lactation, and infancy. The results showed that omega-3 supplementation reduced the risk of pre-eclampsia and low-birth weight in pregnant women, and improved severe retinopathy of prematurity and cholestasis in infants. There were also positive effects on preterm delivery, pre-natal and post-partum depression, glycemic control, and inflammation markers in pregnant women, and sensitization to peanuts, anthropometric measures, language development, visual acuity, and duration of ventilation in infants.

Effectiveness of wheat soya blend supplementation during pregnancy and lactation on pregnancy outcomes and nutritional status of their infants at 6 months of age in Thatta and Sujawal districts of Sindh, Pakistan: a cluster randomized-controlled trial

Gul Nawaz Khan et al.

Summary: The study found that providing wheat soya blend plus during pregnancy and the first 6 months of lactation can effectively reduce the risk of undernutrition and anemia in infants at 6 months of age. However, no significant reduction in the risk of stunting among infants at 6 months of age was observed in the intervention group compared to the control group.

Small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements for the prevention of child malnutrition and promotion of healthy development: overview of individual participant data meta-analysis and programmatic implications

Kathryn G. Dewey et al.

Summary: Research showed that small-quantity lipid-based nutrient supplements can improve growth, development, anemia, and micronutrient status in children aged 6-24 months. The benefits were greater in populations with higher stunting burden or anemia prevalence, and among acutely malnourished children. Co-packaging these supplements with interventions targeting response constraints could lead to greater impact in reducing child mortality and addressing malnutrition.

Summary: The Modular Literature Review method is a novel systematic search and review method that can address multiple research questions simultaneously, providing an accessible, reliable answer to the question of what works. It is well-suited to support prioritization, decisions, and planning for health improvement.

Shweta Khandelwal et al.

Summary: This study conducted in India examined the impact of supplementing pregnant women with 400 mg/day of algal DHA on newborn anthropometry and gestational duration. The results showed that there were no significant differences in birth weight, length, or head circumference of offspring between the group supplemented with DHA and the placebo group.

Supplementation of Omega 3 during Pregnancy and the Risk of Preterm Birth: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Summary: Supplementation with omega 3 fatty acids during pregnancy does not significantly reduce the risk of preterm birth or early preterm birth according to the results of this review. Further studies are needed to determine the impact of omega 3 supplementation during pregnancy on fetal outcomes.
