The impact of glycaemic load on cognitive performance: A meta-analysis and guiding principles for future research

C. M. Gaylor et al.

Summary: The effect of breakfast glycaemic load (GL) on cognition was systematically examined. Results showed no immediate effect of GL on cognition up to 119 min post-consumption, but after 120 min, a low-GL breakfast was associated with better immediate episodic memory scores. Subgroup analyses indicated that the effect was stronger in younger adults and those with better cognitive abilities. A qualitative synthesis of studies involving children and adolescents also suggested potential benefits of a low-GL breakfast on episodic memory and attention.

Plasma brain-derived neurotrophic factor and dynamic cerebral autoregulation in acute response to glycemic control following breakfast in young men

Hayato Tsukamoto et al.

Summary: The study found that breakfast consumption enhanced dynamic cerebral autoregulation in the low frequency range, but a high glycemic index breakfast reduced the brain's ability to regulate blood flow against slow changes in blood pressure. Therefore, breakfast and glycemic control may be important strategies for optimizing cerebrovascular health.

Sleep-wake characteristics, daytime sleepiness, and glycemia in young adults with type 1 diabetes

Stephanie Griggs et al.

Summary: The study aimed to describe objective sleep-wake characteristics and glycemia in young adults with type 1 diabetes, and found associations between sleep variability, sleep fragmentation, daytime sleepiness, and glucose variability. Optimizing sleep may improve overall diabetes management in this population.

International tables of glycemic index and glycemic load values 2021: a systematic review

Fiona S. Atkinson et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed and compiled reliable GI values from over 4000 items, with a part of the values derived using the methodology recommended by the International Standards Organization. Dairy products, legumes, pasta, and fruits were generally low-GI foods, while cereals and cereal products, including whole-grain or whole-meal versions, showed wide variation in GI values. Most varieties of potato were high-GI foods.
