Randomized clinical trials have demonstrated that statin therapy effectively reduces the risk of recurrent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease in patients with established atherosclerotic disease. Therefore, high-intensity statins are universally recommended for patients with atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, regardless of diabetes status.
Randomized clinical trials (RCTs) have shown that lowering cholesterol with statin therapy safely reduces the risk for recurrent atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) in patients with established atherosclerotic disease (secondary prevention).1 For this reason, for patients with ASCVD, including those with and without diabetes, a treatment with high-intensity statins is universally recommended.
