Association of Hearing Aids and Cochlear Implants With Cognitive Decline and Dementia A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

Summary: Hearing loss is linked to cognitive decline, but the effect of hearing restorative devices on cognition is unclear. This study evaluated the associations between hearing aids and cochlear implants with cognitive decline and dementia. The findings suggest that the use of hearing restorative devices is associated with a 19% decrease in the risk of long-term cognitive decline and a 3% improvement in short-term cognitive test scores.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis found that adherence to the Mediterranean (MeDi) diet may lower the risk of cognitive disorders, particularly mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in older adults. Additionally, adherence to the MeDi diet may improve working memory and episodic memory. However, further research and interpretation are needed to clarify the associations with other cognitive outcomes.

Advances in drug design, outcome measures, biomarker use, and trial conduct show promise in accelerating the delivery of new and improved treatments for Alzheimer's disease patients.
