Trait-dependent responses of birds and bats to season and dry forest distance in tropical agroforestry

Carolina Ocampo-Ariza et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of cacao agroforests as alternative habitats for insectivorous birds and bats in tropical dry forest landscapes, especially during the dry season. Cacao agroforests provide valuable resources for these species when resources are scarce in forests, creating win-win situations for conservation and ecosystem services.

Effects of adjacent habitat on nocturnal flying insects in vineyards and implications for bat foraging

Pascal N. Chaperon et al.

Summary: The study found that the type of adjacent habitat around vineyards significantly influences the abundance of insects, with native vegetation and exotic tree plantations having a positive impact on the abundance of most insect orders in bat diets compared to urban areas. Bat activity is significantly correlated with the abundance of Coleoptera and Lepidoptera.

Farming intensity indirectly reduces crop yield through negative effects on agrobiodiversity and key ecological functions

Remi Duflot et al.

Summary: Farming intensity and landscape heterogeneity have an influence on agrobiodiversity and ecological functions, but their contributions to cereal crop production are not clear. In 2016, farming intensity had the greatest direct positive effect on cereal crop yield, followed by agrobiodiversity and ecological functions. However, the direct benefits of farming intensity were reduced due to negative indirect effects. Agrobiodiversity and farming intensity had equal net contributions to cereal crop yields, while heterogeneity of the crop mosaic enhanced biodiversity. In 2017, neither higher farming intensity nor agrobiodiversity and ecological functions could increase cereal production.

Not only hedgerows, but also flower fields can enhance bat activity in intensively used agricultural landscapesl

Celina Herrera Krings et al.

Summary: Agri-environment schemes (AES) are important for farmland biodiversity conservation, but bats are rarely studied in relation to AES effectiveness. This study found that hedgerows have a significant positive effect on bat activity, while the role of other AES remains unclear. To promote bats' biological control services in agricultural landscapes, it is important to establish more AES to increase their diversity and connectivity.

Bats as suppressors of agroforestry pests in beech forests

Leonardo Ancillotto et al.

Summary: Forest ecosystems play a crucial role in conserving global biodiversity and human wellbeing. However, the increasing impact of environmental changes such as climate change, biological invasions, and forest pests poses a significant threat to forests. This study found that forest bats, specifically Barbastella barbastellus and Plecotus auritus, can act as important suppressors of agroforestry pest insects. Preserving animal diversity in forests is essential not only for the health of these ecosystems but also for the surrounding habitats, including farmland.

Insectivorous Bats in Eastern Mediterranean Planted Pine Forests-Effects of Forest Structure on Foraging Activity, Diversity, and Implications for Management Practices

Claudia Allegrini et al.

Summary: This study found that forest structure of pine plantations affects the species composition, richness, and foraging activity of insectivorous bats. Cluttered-habitat species preferred forests with large tree diameter and high pine density, while open-habitat species preferred forests with well-developed canopies and dense shrubs. Mature planted pine forests with a well-developed under-canopy provide suitable foraging grounds for insectivorous bats, including endangered species.

Spatial distribution of bat activity in agricultural fields: implications for ecosystem service estimates

Christopher T. Fill et al.

Summary: Bats provide important ecosystem services in agricultural areas by predating night-flying insects and saving billions of dollars for agricultural industries. The study found that bat activity was highest in areas with more forested edge habitat, and sites with more trees and water had more species present. This suggests that woodland interfaces are important habitats for bats. However, further research is needed to better understand the ecosystem services provided by bats in agricultural landscapes.

Landscape simplification increases vineyard pest outbreaks and insecticide use

Summary: The study found that in Spanish vineyards, higher landscape complexity led to lower pest outbreaks and reduced insecticide applications. This suggests that increasing landscape complexity can mitigate pest populations and decrease insecticide use.

Landscape composition and life-history traits influence bat movement and space use: Analysis of 30 years of published telemetry data

Alexis Laforge et al.

Summary: The study shows that landscape composition significantly affects bat home range sizes and daily foraging movements; home ranges were up to 42% smaller in the most habitat-diversified landscapes, and mean daily distances were up to 30% shorter in the most forested landscapes. Bat home range size significantly increased with body mass, wing aspect ratio, and wing loading, and decreased with habitat specialization.

Pest control services provided by bats in vineyard landscapes

Yohan Charbonnier et al.

Summary: The study found that bats increase their hunting activity significantly when European grapevine moths are present in vineyards. Molecular analysis shows that at least 10 species of bats prey on the three grapevine moth species. This suggests that bats can be natural enemies of grape pests in vineyard landscapes.

Combining DNA metabarcoding and ecological networks to inform conservation biocontrol by small vertebrate predators

Vanessa A. Mata et al.

Summary: In multifunctional landscapes, diverse communities of flying vertebrate predators play a vital role in insect pest control services. By combining DNA metabarcoding and ecological network analysis, individual species within diverse predator communities that have a disproportionate contribution to pest control services can be identified. This framework can help target species for conservation biocontrol efforts in multifunctional landscapes.
