The interaction between wheat roots and soil pores in structured field soil

Hu Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the relationship between wheat root growth and soil macroporosity in the subsoil, finding that soil macroporosity has a significant impact on root development. Management practices that enhance soil porosity may be an effective strategy to improve deep rooting of wheat in the field.

Evaluating the impacts of saline water irrigation on soil water-salt and summer maize yield in subsurface drainage condition using coupled HYDRUS and EPIC model

Genxiang Feng et al.

Summary: Field experiment combined with numerical simulation was used to evaluate the effects of saline water irrigation on soil water-salt movement, crop growth and water productivity. The appropriate irrigation water salinity was found to be 4.0-4.4 dS m(-1) under subsurface drain depth of 80 cm.

Responses of soil enzyme activity and soil organic carbon stability over time after cropland abandonment in different vegetation zones of the Loess Plateau of China

Hongwei Xu et al.

Summary: The study showed that after cropland abandonment, there are significant differences in soil enzyme activity, SOC stability, and driving factors in different vegetation zones. In steppe and forest-steppe zones, soil enzyme activity increased while SOC stability decreased with recovery time; whereas in the forest zone, both parameters remained relatively stable. The changes in soil enzyme activity and SOC stability were closely related to vegetation diversity, coverage, and soil nutrient levels in different recovery sites.

Evolution of soil salinization under the background of landscape patterns in the irrigated northern slopes of Tianshan Mountains, Xinjiang, China

Qingwei Zhuang et al.

Summary: This study explores the spatiotemporal variations of soil salinization by coupling spatial distribution and landscape patterns in the irrigated northern slopes of Tianshan Mountains. The proportion of salinized cultivated land has increased over the years, but the percentage of soil salinization in stable cultivated land has significantly decreased.

On the spatial variability and influencing factors of soil organic carbon and total nitrogen stocks in a desert oasis ecotone of northwestern China

Qiqi Cao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial distribution and influencing factors of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks to the depth of 3 m in a desert oasis ecotone of northwestern China. The results showed that SOC and TN stocks in nabkha dunes were generally higher than in bare sand dunes, and with the extension of cultivation years, the top 0.4 m depths saw significant increases in both SOC and TN stocks on croplands.

Soil salinization management for sustainable development: A review

Ajay Singh

Summary: Expanding irrigated agriculture is essential to feed the growing global population, but it can lead to soil salinization without proper management, which is a persistent environmental issue. Over 20% of global irrigated areas currently face soil salinization and waterlogging, with potential expansion to over 50% by 2050. Proper management of soil salinization is crucial for achieving Sustainable Development Goals, and comprehensive measures are needed to address this environmental problem.

Global predictions of primary soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century

Amirhossein Hassani et al.

Summary: Excess salt accumulation in the root zone causes soil salinization, which affects soil health, biodiversity, and food security. The authors used machine learning algorithms to predict global soil salinization under changing climate in the 21st century, identifying hotspots in drylands such as South America, southern and western Australia, Mexico, southwest United States, and South Africa. Conversely, they project a decrease in soil salinity in northwest United States, the Horn of Africa, Eastern Europe, Turkmenistan, and west Kazakhstan in response to climate change.

The Significance of Microbial Transformation of Nitrogen Compounds in the Light of Integrated Crop Management

Aleksandra Grzyb et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is a fundamental component of plant cells and microorganisms, entering soil through various sources such as fertilizers, plant and animal residues, and biological nitrogen fixation. The transformation of nitrogen compounds by microorganisms in soil is influenced by climatic conditions and soil properties. Proper management of nitrogen is crucial to prevent eutrophication in aquatic ecosystems.

Effects of Agricultural Reclamation on Soil Physicochemical Properties in the Mid-Eastern Coastal Area of China

Yan Xu et al.

Summary: Research shows that soil physicochemical properties change significantly after agricultural reclamation in coastal zones, with parameters like electrical conductivity, exchange sodium percentage, and sodium adsorption ratio decreasing, and organic matter, total nitrogen, and alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen increasing. Different land use trajectories also have obvious effects on soil properties.
