Phosphorus plant removal from European agricultural land

Panos Panagos et al.

Summary: Phosphorus is an important nutrient for plant growth, but its imbalance in modern agriculture has become a critical issue. In order to reduce pollution and ensure future agricultural production and food security, it is necessary to estimate the phosphorus budget and optimize its use. This study focuses on estimating the phosphorus removal from crops and crop residues in European Union and the UK regions, and provides a projection for 2030. The findings aim to improve phosphorus balances and explore the feasibility of Farm to Fork objectives.

Toward a Global Model for Soil Inorganic Phosphorus Dynamics: Dependence of Exchange Kinetics and Soil Bioavailability on Soil Physicochemical Properties

Ying-Ping Wang et al.

Summary: The representation of phosphorus cycling in global land models is still quite simplistic, especially for soil inorganic phosphorus. This study compiled data from 147 soil samples to optimize a model of soil inorganic P dynamics using three parameters. The calibrated model performed well and the model parameters varied significantly with different soil properties.

Can Long-Term Experiments Predict Real Field N and P Balance and System Sustainability? Results from Maize, Winter Wheat, and Soybean Trials Using Mineral and Organic Fertilisers

Summary: The study evaluated the reliability of long-term experimental N and P balance estimates and compared the sustainability of short- and long-term experiments. It was found that crops are generally over-fertilised in real field conditions, particularly maize.
