Eucalyptus Succession on Croplands in the Highlands of Northwestern Ethiopia: Economic Impact Analysis Using Farm Household Model

Amare Tesfaw et al.

Summary: The northwestern highlands of Ethiopia have severe land degradation and low agricultural productivity, affecting the livelihoods of smallholder farmers. However, in recent years, smallholder farmers have been converting their croplands to Eucalyptus plantations for economic benefits. The study found that Eucalyptus plantations resulted in higher gross margins compared to food crop cultivation. It is recommended to expand Eucalyptus plantations in lands with terrain characteristics and low suitability for food crops.

Living income benchmarking of rural households in low-income countries

Gerrie W. J. van de Ven et al.

Summary: The article introduces the Living Income Methodology as a transparent local benchmark to estimate living income for rural households, providing a means to assess development opportunities in low-income countries. It can reflect progress of rural households on their path out of poverty and acts as a meaningful benchmark to measure progress on Sustainable Development Goals 1 and 2.

Exploring opportunities for diversification of smallholders' rice-based farming systems in the Senegal River Valley

Antoine Brosseau et al.

Summary: This study explores the trade-offs and synergies of farming systems in response to innovative rice cultivation activities by analyzing current farming systems, main drivers impacting farm management, and farmers' perspectives on rice intensification. The results show that government programs and farmers' unions strongly influence farmers' decision-making in agricultural production, with a trend towards investing in vegetable production rather than increasing or maintaining rice double cropping. The modeling outcomes highlight the importance of aligning government priorities with farmers' objectives and constraints in order to ensure national food security in the Senegal River Valley.

Assessing smallholder sustainable intensification in the Ethiopian highlands

James Hammond et al.

Summary: Sustainable intensification is a method to increase food production without compromising sustainability goals. This study developed a data analysis approach for a multi-variate assessment of sustainable intensification, quantifying indicators in agricultural production, economics, environment, human welfare, and social domains. Results in Ethiopia showed that increased production intensity was correlated with higher scores in economic, social, and agricultural domains, indicating that productivity improvements can coexist with other sustainability domains.

Vitamin A supplementation and estimated number of averted child deaths in Ethiopia: 15 years in practice (2005-2019)

Arnaud Laillou et al.

Summary: Over the past 15 years, Vitamin A Supplementation (VAS) has been implemented in Ethiopia, leading to significant improvements in child mortality rates. However, disparities in coverage based on wealth and rural-urban residence still exist. Increasing universal coverage of VAS is crucial to prevent more child deaths, especially with the potential overlap of alternative programs like vitamin A fortification.

Analysis of banana and cocoa export commodities in food system transformation, with special reference to certification schemes as drivers of change

Carlos F. B. Alho et al.

Summary: Food systems analysis is increasingly used to understand the relationships between production, distribution, and consumption of food products. The study focuses on the position of global export commodities and the major drivers determining the functioning of these systems. Certification schemes, while not a silver bullet solution, have the potential to help positive food system transformations.

Assessment of livestock feed supply and demand concerning livestock productivity in Lalo Kile district of Kellem Wollega Zone, Western Ethiopia

Jabesa Ayele et al.

Summary: The research revealed a significant impact of seasonality on feed balance in the Lalo kile district, resulting in substantial differences in feed supply. Additionally, main limitations in both agro-ecologies included low production and reproduction, poor use of existing feedstuffs, and poor adoption of improved forage production. Therefore, the adoption of better fodder and supplementation of productive animals should be considered for successful livestock development in the study area.

Dairy farming systems driven by the market and low-cost intensification in West Africa: the case of Burkina Faso

Eric Vall et al.

Summary: The increase in demand for dairy products in Burkina Faso is encouraging livestock producers to develop milk production. Three types of dairy systems have been characterized, with pastoralists benefitting women from milk sales, while market-oriented dairy farmers primarily benefit men from the revenue generated.
