Are There Too Many Farms in the World? Labor Market Transaction Costs, Machine Capacities, and Optimal Farm Size

Andrew D. Foster et al.

Summary: Labor market transaction costs explain the higher efficiency of the smallest farms compared to slightly larger farms in low-income countries, while increases in machine capacity and operational scale result in the rising upper tail of productivity observed globally.

Measurement Error Mechanisms Matter: Agricultural Intensification with Farmer Misperceptions and Misreporting

Kibrom A. Abay et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of measurement error generation mechanisms on inference. It introduces a simple empirical technique to generate unbiased estimates and apportion measurement error between misreporting and misperceptions. The analysis indicates that farmers increasing input application rates per unit area as plot size decreases reflects a mixture of misreporting and misperceptions.
