Simulated dataset of corn response to nitrogen over thousands of fields and multiple years in Illinois

German Mandrini et al.

Summary: Nitrogen (N) fertilizer recommendations for corn in the US Midwest have been a long-standing puzzle, and the lack of long-term data is a major challenge. To address this, researchers have developed an analytical platform based on crop simulations, calibrated and validated with data from hundreds of trials. This dataset is valuable for N management, machine leaching, and environmental policy analysis.

Analysis of rainfall trend using non-parametric methods and innovative trend analysis during 1901-2020 in seven states of North East India

Shyam Lochan Bora et al.

Summary: This study analysed the variability and trends in annual and seasonal rainfall in the seven states of North East India from 1901 to 2020. Various non-parametric tests were used, including Mann-Kendall, trend-free pre-whitening Mann-Kendall, modified Mann-Kendall, and innovative trend analysis. The results showed variabilities in rainfall across these states, with some significant differences observed in certain seasons. The MMK test was found to be the most effective in predicting changes in rainfall distribution across seasons. This study could be valuable for policymakers in making decisions related to climate and water resource management.

Tackling climate risk to sustainably intensify smallholder maize farming systems in southern Africa

William C. D. Nelson et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the limitations of sustainable intensification of maize-based farming systems for smallholder farmers in South Africa, with a case study in the Limpopo province. By combining survey data and quantitative agronomic observations, the researchers evaluated different technology packages over a period of 21 seasons. The simulations showed that combining multiple management interventions resulted in the highest maize grain yields and lowest harvest failure risk. They also found that simple agronomic adjustments based on weather forecasts can turn rainfall variability into an opportunity.

Is wetter better? Exploring agriculturally-relevant rainfall characteristics over four decades in the Sahel

Miina Porkka et al.

Summary: The semi-arid Sahel region has been experiencing an upward trend in annual precipitation since the 1970s, with improvements in rainy season duration mainly confined to areas with increased annual rainfall. However, the association between annual rainfall and dry spell occurrence during the growing season is less clear. Overall, only scattered areas across the Sahel have seen improvements in agriculturally-relevant intraseasonal rainfall characteristics since the 1980s, while over half of the region has experienced declines or no improvements in these variables.

Smallholder farmer perceptions about the impact of COVID-19 on agriculture and livelihoods in Senegal

B. Jan Middendorf et al.

Summary: A survey in Senegal revealed concerns among smallholder farmers about access to inputs, planting, yields, feeding livestock, selling livestock, and hiring labor due to COVID-19. The majority expressed worries about food security, market disruptions, and price increases, emphasizing the need for a farming systems approach to assess impacts and enhance resilience.

Soil and Climate Characterization to Define Environments for Summer Crops in Senegal

Carlos Manuel Hernandez et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a soil-climate characterization for the Senegal summer-crops region using a large dataset of soil and climate variables. Through principal component analysis and spatial fuzzy c-means algorithm, five soil and three climate homogeneous areas were identified, capturing 73% of the soil and 88% of the climate variation. This classification will aid in strategic planning for future land use and capability classifications.

Optimizing Sowing Date and Planting Density Can Mitigate the Impacts of Future Climate on Maize Yield: A Case Study in the Guanzhong Plain of China

Fang Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that, under future climate conditions, potential yield and rain-fed yield losses of summer maize can be reduced with appropriate measures, while the yield loss of spring maize is smaller. Changing sowing date and planting density has a greater impact on spring maize yield, and the influence weakens as climate change intensifies. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate other adaptation measures to cope with climate change in the Guanzhong Plain of China.
